This is a HORRIBLE place. The staff are beyond any definition you can imagine of rude, even if you speak to them in French. Yes. Even by French standard they're unbelievably rude. If you measured their rudeness and disinterest in the welfare of their customers by 1970s Parisian standards, they would still be un -freaking - believably rude. If I could sum it up in one sentence - if one day you die, and your eventual destination is hell - well this is the cafe that awaits you. Our trip to this cafe can be described as: sit down at table. wait for table service. wait, and wait, and wait while being repeatedly passed by staff with better things to do like pretending to clear tables VERRRYY slowly, talking to each other loudly while doing nothing or making bantering small talk with customers that have already paid. I asked several members of staff for assistance and was told to keep waiting. Each of the staff I asked were too important to take an order. No matter how hard we tried to get someone to take our order (in French - so there's no language barrier). At one point we were approached by a waiter and asked if we wanted food as that was now IMPOSSIBLE. COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE. Perhaps we could go down the road to a kebab shop (just around the corner, we were reassured) if we wanted food at 3pm in the afternoon, as such a thing as providing food is BEYOND REASON for a cafe next to a ski slope. The kitchen, Madame, she is CLOSED and she will not re-open for anyone. Even if the President of the Republic himself were to suddenly descend upon Courchevel 1650 and demand a plate of chips, the kitchen of L'Ours Blanc would stand firm in its absolute inability to open, for any man. It is a matter of PRINCIPLE. A little giddy with the sudden attention from an actual staff member, we reassured the waiter, we just wanted a hot drink. Oh OK, he replied. someone will be by to take your order. But not me, was the unspoken subtext, as I am FAR TOO important. Well, that person never came. Despite my repeated efforts to attract their attention. After a good 30 minutes of this, my 5 year old son was so cold and exhausted he finally began to cry. The staff still ignored us. Who cares if a child cries? Not L'Ours Blanc!!! They are above such trivialities as the crying of tired, thirsty children. In fact, I began to secretly suspect the waitstaff might actually feed on the tears of the young. I can't see any other reason for the cafe's continued existence since they don't appear to be interested in making money. So we got up and left. No one cared. Well actually a customer at another table looked really uncomfortable as we walked away, as I was trying to comfort my son and carry two sets of skis. But not the staff. They watched us go. At last, a potential customer - defeated... Victory! We went somewhere else that was happy to indulge in a concept L'Ours Blanc is not interested in: exchanging cash for goods and services. We had hot drinks within 5 minutes of entering the door. With an actual smile. Smiling is forbidden at L'Ours Blanc. By customers, staff and even passersby who sense its pervading and oppressive gloom. Even in the summer, grass will not grow in the shade of its "terrasse".... Anyway joking aside: We go to Courchevel every year. We have a place there. We will never bother L'Ours Blanc with any of our future business, and we've advised our family and friends to do the same. I strongly advise you not to either.
