Staying for our second visit at the nearby Hotel La Croix De Vernuche on our homeward journey, we booked for dinner at Le Bengy having had a good experience there a couple of years ago (and it is within walking distance of the hotel). We were not disappointed. The food offering was as good if not better than our previous visit and the recommended Sancerre, at 21Euros was fantastic. A restaurant well worth visiting.
Everything looked from the outside but the service was very poor, two hours later I gave up on the offer of dessert and coffee which they seemed quite pleased about as it was included in my order, and took my leave. The first glass of red wine of the house was nice which encouraged me to finish the glass and ask for another, oops the glass was full of sediment and the next glass was a completely different wine which was even chilled not like the first, room temperature.After forward all day to relaxing over a nice French meal to round off my holiday I got the opposite, the food I did have was ok. Shame!
We had a very good meal. The food was very well cooked and nicely served. The restaurant was very busy but all the courses arrived in a timely manner. The environs of the restaurant are slightly off putting because it is surrounded by industrial premises BUT do not be put off. Once inside it is well decorated and comfortable. Most of the customers seemed to be local which, in France, is always a good sign. Definitely worth making a reservation. If we had not we would not have got a table.e
Suggéré par notre hôtel, nous nous sommes promenés de La Croix au restaurant. Sur conseil j'avais pré-réservé une table, bon conseil car le restaurant est extrêmement prisé. Très bons menus variés à différents prix. Il y a quelque chose pour tout le monde. Le personnel est professionnel mais en même temps sympathique et n'est pas opposé à une blague anglaise. Une cuisine délicieuse. Merci Bengy.
Sorry but this was the low point of 10 days in the South East of France. On our return journey to Calais, we stayed overnight in Nevers. After booking into our hotel, we looked for a nice restaurant to enjoy an evening meal. We arrived at La Bengy and attempted to access the restaurant. The door was looked and several members of staff, just stared at us through the door and walked away! None of them attempted to help and simply walked away, leaving us standing on the doorstep. We gave in and went back to our car, this was when we realised we were at the wrong door doh! An easy mistake to make as signage was pretty poor but why didn’t the staff help us out and direct us to the correct door? Customer service clearly not a priority pity, as we went to another restaurant a short distance away and their staff and food were fabulous.
