32 rue Saint Jean, 66500 Villefranche-de-Conflent, France, Villefranche-De-Conflent

A small high quality family run restaurant with a delightful central open air courtyard excellent food. It is situated in the centre of Villefranche De Conflent, take a walk around this quaint medieval town (there are a number of car parks around the perimeter of the town) to work up an appetite for the delights that await. The restaurant courtyard has stone walls dating back to 12th Century and plants and cafe furniture to add to the ambiance, the tables have plenty of space between them ensuring you feel you are dining around people and not sharing a table with them.We had the Serrano ham with Spanish cheese and prawn fricassee to start, the Serrano ham was melt in your mouth and a great contrast to the medium strength cheese, the fricassee was creamy and served with some crusty bread to mop up all of the delicious sauce. The main we had chicken and king prawn fricassee and fillet steak with Foie Gras. Chicken and Prawn seem unusual bed fellows but complemented each other perfectly, be prepared to shell some quite large King prawns! The steak was very tender and topped with Foie Gras liver (not pate) another great combination, the steak was a little over done for me so be clear how you would like it cooked (I like medium), this is only a very minor criticism as the taste and texture for the meat was excellent. Other diners had “meat on a hook”, this is skewered meat (or King Prawns) delivered to you on a tall stand so you can pull the meat off piece by piece, it looked just as good as what we had. One thing to consider is that the food is deliciously rich, so if you have a creamy starter, consider something without cream for a main course and good luck if you can make it to desert, we failed miserably! There are lighter options on the menu but we are real foodies!Menus are in English and the very friendly and attentive staff spoke enough to help but not too much to spoil the authenticity of the experience. They sell local red wine in 50cl bottles, so you can have a small glass to wash down your delicious steak!
