Les Tetes d'Ail

22 rue des Bonnetieres, 83000 Toulon, France

We were wandering around after strolling through the Toulon market on the Cour Lafayette looking for lunch when we saw the fountain, the four olive trees, and the awning of Les Tetes d'Ail. The 'ardoise' menu was appealing with the plat du jour and fish of the day clearly listed, along with the options for entrée, plat, dessert. We sat out on the shaded terrace where we could catch the breeze and people watch. Chilled water, a plate with olives, pain grillé, and garlicky chick pea spread were delivered, along with the menu and my pastis. The waitress explained the plat du jour and told us about the fish - grilled, whole daurade, and the special beef dish. We had one order of the chicken curry with coconut(plat du jour), mild but tasty, served with steamed rice, a green salad with thin strips of courgette, and ratatouille. And one vegetarian plate that was served with a green gazpacho, a tomato stuffed with cheese, ratatouille, and the green salad. A pichet (50cl) of rosé, chilled, was our drink choice. We both had desserts - café gourmand with house made tiramisu, a small seasonal fruit salad, and a cake with chocolate frosting and whipped cream. We also had an artisanal ice cream, two flavors - citron and dark, bitter chocolate. An excellent meal and very reasonable. The service is very good. This is a place obviously popular with locals and tourists alike, as well it should be. Try it, you will not be disappointed. Do know that the staff has a limited command of English, but are friendly and helpful.
