I am a Racine, WI life long resident of 100% Danish descent, born in America with ALL Danish parts. For years I have been in search of our most favored Christmas dinner called Flaeskesteg which is a pork loin with the hide remaining and bones removed. I heard of Al's in Wilmette in The Danish Pioneer News Paper and ordered a 5 lb. loin for Christmas Day. Upon opening the freezer packaging I found the hide already been sliced properly right down to the layer of fat underneath, in which we rub sea salt between the cuts following a half hour of boiling. To make a long story short I have to say after 66 years of celebrating Christmas involving our favorite annual meal THIS was the VERY BEST Flae...
While walking around town, we decided to stop by a local butcher shop for some goodies to make for dinner. We stumbled upon Al's and decided why not check it out! When walking in, to the right you'll have the authentic Italian pastas and the assortment of sausages in the freezer. The center of the store has a variety of condiments, most of which were sauces and rubs for barbecue. The remainder of the store were the meat counters. Al was helping us when we checked out. Please keep in mind it is cash only but there is an ATM in the store for your convenience!
The product here has a good reputation, but there are a couple of issues. First, they don't display their prices, and second, they only accept cash—no credit cards. This raises concerns about their business practices, particularly regarding tax obligations. We all put in too much effort to support those who try to evade their responsibilities. Because of this, we're leaving and heading to Ziers instead.
My husband loves to grill and smoke meats, so naturally we have tried lots of butcher shops in Wilmette glenview. Als is the best, hands down. Also, cash only. And for everyone complaining about his mood or lack of masks, don't you have a grandfather? Get over it ;

This is an amazing butcher shop. They have everything you can think of. All the meat is PRIME and the staff is super helpful and nice. They ground me fresh beef and cut a 2 inch thick porterhouse. You should get all your meat from Al's!
This establishment poses a significant public health risk. The owner is strongly opposed to mask-wearing and even put up signs during the mandate stating that masks were not necessary.
Best butcher shop in the Midwest. Without a doubt. If you are looking for a meat market , then look no further. This is the meat market for you. If not, that's your fault.
We had the best steak we've had in years! While in Wilmette, we discovered Al's online, and it was such a fantastic find. We will definitely be returning!
