We came here for a dinner reservation with great expectations. And, let me say right at the beginning that the food does not disappoint. However, the entire experience, and at these prices it ought to be a dining experience, is wonky at best. The restaurant is situated in a strip-mall adjacent to a Subway and facing the parking lot of a local bakery. Naturally, the owners chose to cover the windows entirely. As a result, the interior is a cavernous experience. The design incorporates industrial elements of the existing space with the result that as the dining room fills the noise level increases significantly. This intrusion is amplified by the staff. Go too Backhouse. You will at first be confounded by the blacked out, out of business exterior butted up to a 7-11, but you will be rewarded with a visual feast the second you find the right door to open, and then a memorably ambitious culinary experience.leeland, our server, provided the professional tour throughout the evening, as we enjoyed the chef counter show as the owner and his minions moved through the courses in a showy yet unpretentious demonstration of haute cuisine preparation.having done the chef counters at hip joints in bigger cities, and been thoroughly disappointed, i was surprised to the upside by the enjoyment of watching the staff prepare our tasting courses.definitely g...

We celebrated our 20th anniversary here with friends. Had the chefs tasting menu which included 12 courses. Also did the premium wine pairing package. I highly reccomend trying this restaurant. The service is phenomenal (Nadia explained each wine with enthusiasm and a genuine love of wine). The food was great. Did I love everything? No. Does it matter? Of course not. It would be impossible to serve 12 courses of food to any one person and have them love everything. For me the liver mousse was not great but I don't like duck liver but I tried it because that's what you do. The smoked trout, corn crepe, dip egg, and duck breast were fantastic. We actually spent four hours here and no one tried...

Wow... best restaurant experience ever! An understated facade could fool the average patron. Located in a strip mall, near a small "dollar store" one would never guess there is a treasure inside... the opaque windows completely hiding the foodie find. We were lucky to get pre-theater reservations and opted for the smallest of the three tasting menus. Thank goodness we did not opt for the a la carte option! Each tasting was better than the last... finishing with a delicious peach with basil ice cream and a streusel crumble (each grain of which was worth more than a huge helping of a lesser dessert!). If you don't mind choosing from one of three tasting menus- the most expensive is $95 CAD, or a limited à la carte you might try the Back House. Cheese and wine with the tasting menus are extra. The waitstaff is extremely well trained not only to provide excellent service but to re-enforce the grandness of the tasting menus.. We chose the a la carte. The duck was "chewy". and, in my opinion overcooked, I was told that it could not be prepared to be less so and the waitress quickly suggested an alternative, chicken which had a pleasant taste but was not remarkable. Enjoyed a great dinner w/ friends..would have missed it, if not for friend who knows the area...in a strip mall, a short drive away from the town, with windows that are blacked out so that it looks like it is closed. Once inside, it is a cool/casual "repurposed" decor and it smelled amazing due to the wood firing technique. Not a big menu, but most of us agreed it was delicious. One friend ordered fish that was not cooked to her liking...waiter said it is the technique that makes it look raw. Hmm? She did not enjoy it. It would have been fun to do the tasting menu, but we were not hungry enough as a group. It was a little challenging for one friend who has Ciliac and must eat gluten-free...m...

Tucked between a UPS store and a convenience store, the Backhouse is completely unassuming and surprisingly well hidden. Inside however is a completely different experience. Exceptional service from the servers (Nadia was a consummate professional), host and chefs, an exciting tasting menu and an a la carte menu that was mouth-watering to read! Allow lots of time if your preference is for the tasting menu!

This was an interesting place. It was a price-fix menu and there were a couple of different options. Some of the offerings were quite tasty and others were just marginal. The duck dishes didn't seem cooked all the way. The duck egg confit was amazing. The zucchini blossoms were amazing and the dessert was amazing. The restaurant was quite warm. It is definitely an experience.

This is quite a dining experience. Don't expect a normal dinner!! We enjoyed every moment. The service is outstanding & food so tasty--lots of small portions but all presented in unique ways. Don't shy away from the outside appearance as inside is the wonderful smell of a wood-fired oven & warm, cozy atmosphere. Definitely loved our dinner
