It is a shame this place has gone down hill. My husband had fish and chips and my son had chicken nuggets. I had onion rings. I wish I had read the other reviews as the batter is terrible!!! It is white, soggy and cold....Surely it is not that difficult to put something in a deep fryer?? They must have changed chef. The creme brulee is liquid. I have been here a few times and love the building but you can get better elsewhere. We were never asked if we enjoyed the meal. I actually complained to the waitress about the onion rings as I could not eat them they were that raw. They should have taken it off our bill. To top it all the receptionist said I suppose I can take cash this time. Yeah eit...
On arrival one receptionist at desk taking bookings on computer/telephone, long wait, didn 't feel at all welcomed. Food good. Service at table good but not attentive after food was served. At times no staff in Bistro at all. Coffee in drawing room good but lack of staff presence and warmth. Room lacks atmosphere and is full. No one to show us how to get to drawing room. Whole experience lacked warmth. Lack of ambience throughout. Been before and had a better experience but on Saturday 's experience I would think twice before returning.
Ordered takeout from the Balbirnie Courtyard and was very disappointed. Which is a shame as I have enjoyed a takeout from their feast in the forest last year on two separate occasions and enjoyed each time and had high hopes for their new Courtyard takeout....Ordered the fish and chips and the chips were soggy, while their fish batter was as bad. I understand it is takeout food and don't expect star service, but coming from Balbirnie house you would expect better. Sadly, I doubt I will order from the Courtyard again.
Have never eaten at Balbirnie but I kept on receiving their early bird ads. Went along today and was really impressed. We had ceasar salad, beef bourguignon and sea bass. All excellent and good portions. Our server was Melissa who was professional, friendly and helpful....Such a good experience, we will be returning soon. Only tiny comment is that a wider choice of alcohol free beers would be good but it is a minor comment. Well done Balbirnie House.

good experience, was a little spoiled by a family of two young children, rather loud, and walking around, and not disciplined by elders. our reason to come here and not go to the local wetherspoons was to celebrate my wife's birthday in a quiet environment. also when I booked table, it mentioned the birthday of my wife, but that was not recognized.
This wonderful restaurant is located within Balbirnie House, and is filled with charm and atmosphere. The food is delightful and delicious, offered at a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend dining here, and nothing beats finishing off with a cup of coffee in the lounge.
the service was very good, the atmosphere was excellent and the food was excellent in quality and quantity. the first choice for lunch in the opposite.
this was a birthday party for my father, who was 80 this day and the two girls in the service were excellent and cared for our table. superb.
