"We called in to the cafe was still open at 3.45 after a wander around Barangaroo. The cafe was still quite busy. Which is always a good sign that things are happening. The coffee was well crafted and tasty we also had a friand which was quite fresh and no nuked past it's life. The wharf view was quite pleasant."

Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience at Bar Fredo in Walsh Bay this morning. The waitress was carrying our order, reached out across the table and dropped the smoothie. It went EVERYWHERE: on my dress, in my hair, all over my iPhone, my handbag, my son's bag - literally, everywhere. That's ok, everybody makes mistakes. But we got no apology or acknoledgement from the management; furthermore, when we got our bill and tried to see whether we could get a discount given all of our stuff is now covered in sticky smoothie - we were ridiculed by the management. Their closing line was: "Enjoy your washing!"What a disappointing experience on a Saturday morning, when we were so looking forward to sitting down in a cafe and catching up with good friends.Customer service is quite simple, really. Your staff member spills a drink on a customer, you come up, apologise and offer a latte on the house... Unfortunately, staff and management at Bar Fredo prefer to argue and be rude to their customers.

This is another occasion on which I am pleased that the cafes I passed were closed. Bar Fredo was open and I found a great place for breakfast. We were trying to decide between the two fruit loaf toasts on the menu - Turkish and the familiar toast offered elsewhere. The waiter suggested that we try both, and found that even the familiar toast was somewhat different - the slices were thick and generous. The Turkish was also delicious, softer (as we had been told) but crisp on the outside. The coffees were very good indeed. We liked the service, the location and the price. Next time we shall try the muffins with fresh fruit that are displayed inside the café.

While having lunch at Bar Fredo (why not double 'd'), my friend found a large piece of plastic in her baguette. She had not realised it was there until she had nearly finished eating it. She had, unawares, eaten some of it. I complained to the cook and other staff and they were rude, arrogant and disrespectful of my age and my complaints. They kept saying well she ate it (once she discovered the plastic, she stopped eating it). They refused to take the cost of the sandwich off our bill. Never, anywhere in Australia or the world, have I been treated with such an unfriendly and discourteous staff.

To get away from the crush and long queues for food at the Sydney Writers Fest, we wandered along the water's edge past the piers of Walsh Bay to a small eating place at the end of the boardwalk where Bar Fredo is now Zupano's. Just five minutes' stroll from our hotel for an excellent breakfast for two for $27.50 (vs $47 for the equivalent back at the hotel). Great Kenya coffee, open for breakfast and lunch, value for money any day of the year.
