The Baratella is a true Italian restaurant which is excellently managed. The historic atmosphere is great and hasn´t changed in decades (but been renovated sensitively.) Waitresses are hearty and professional. Food is always delicious - particularly the home made pasta but also the ossobuco, Saltimbocca or Piccata milanese. Helpings are generous and there´s always a second helping. Don´t forget to have some homemade amaretti with your Espresso. Booking recommended.
I've been to Baratella many times over the years and have never been disappointed. The homemade pasta are excellent, the Baratella sauce is fantastic, as are all other pasta dishes. The staff is friendly and the service is good. The tables are spaced out nicely so a quiet conversation is possible. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a nice, quiet dinner or a tasty lunch. Service is fairly fast, though at lunch you will need more than an hour of time.
Just before Christmas we went back to me preferred italian restaurant in town. As a native St. Galloise, I enjoyed our dinner as usual. We just had pasta and salads - it was as delicious as usual. A few years ago I had invited my whole family for dinner. Wirklich das beste italienische Restaurant in St. Gallen. Leider komme ich nur drei bis vier Mal pro Jahr - aber ich versuche jedes Mal einen Abstecher ins Baratella zu machen - mit Freunden oder Familie.
Our family suggested this restaurant for our last evening in St. Gallens before returning to the States -- and it was great. Since they have been going there for years, we knew we were in for a treat. Attentive staff, large portions served in stages and atmosphere that was comfortable and inviting.
We had the classic italian spaghettis, once sugo classico and the baratella ones. The taste was great and the offered a supplement. The personel is very kind. The location is easy to access and the interior is nice. Attention, it is not a pizzeria, more traditional italian cuisine.
