Beijing City is definitely more of a Chinese restaurant than a traditional fish and chips shop. If you're looking for a classic chippy experience, your best bet is to head to Salty Towers in Underbank, assuming it's still early in the day. That said, Beijing City isn't bad at all—I still enjoy grabbing chips and sausage from there when I visit; it's just not that typical chippy style some people might expect. However, if you're after authentic Chinese cuisine, you're in for a treat. Their salt and pepper box is fantastic, though I do wish they’d swap the curry sauce for sweet and sour sauce, but I'm usually too shy to ask! To be fair, the special fried rice and the fish were quite nice, so I would rate them 4 stars. However, my experience with the chips and curry was disappointing. I had to call to complain about the initial batch, which was unacceptable, and although they sent a replacement, it was no better. The new order contained a few fresh chips mixed with a lot of reheated ones, which were hollow and had several burnt bits. The second batch was slightly fresher, but still terrible. I would never order from there again. While the prices were reasonable, it wasn't worth the trouble of not being able to enjoy my meal.
My new favorite Chinese restaurant! I tried it for the first time tonight and ordered a small sharing box of salt and pepper dishes, which was plenty for two and everything tasted fresh. We also took advantage of the Monday to Thursday meal deals, ordering a chicken curry and sweet and sour chicken. Both dishes were excellent and packed with flavor. This has really gone back to the quality of food they used to serve years ago ever since the new takeover. Everything is spot on and fresh!
