We made a reservation at The Black Duck after receiving a recommendation while we were in town. The dining room was beautifully decorated, with tables covered in crisp white tablecloths. Our server, Laura, greeted us promptly and offered us a choice of water: sparkling, still, or Cape May's finest tap water. The new owner, Ashley, stopped by to introduce herself and say hello. Laura took care of our BYOB wine and explained the evening's specials. The appetizer specials were conch fritters and a fig and watermelon salad, both of which we ordered and thoroughly enjoyed. We experienced a “Crème Brûlée emergency” while vacationing in Cape May with my in-laws. They were eager to try some, but the restaurants we visited were always out of it. On our second-to-last night, on a bit of a whim, I called the Black Duck to inquire if they had Crème Brûlée and if they could accommodate a party of seven on a busy Friday night. The hostess was incredibly friendly! She checked with the kitchen, found that they had plenty of brûlée available, and seated us at a lovely table where we could savor our desserts. The Black Duck has lost its charm. The new owners seem to struggle with distinguishing between running a gastropub and a fine dining venue. We have been loyal patrons of the Duck for decades, always relying on a consistently excellent menu, professional service, a prix fixe option, and the best lobster bisque on the Cape. Although our meals were decent, they lacked the finesse we had come to expect. Additionally, we were seated in an extremely uncomfortable spot squeezed between two doors—one leading to the kitchen and the other to the main dining area. While we wish the new owners the best in their efforts to attract a new clientele, we won’t be returning to the Duck anytime soon.

And we were seated in an impossibly uncomfortable space wedged between two doors one leading to the kitchen and the other into the main dining room. I finished my salmon, and it was fantastic! I ordered it to-go, and they included some bread for dipping into the delicious broth. After having some negative experiences at nearby restaurants, I'm really glad I decided to try Black Duck. The staff was friendly and efficient, making for an amazing meal. I'm pretty sure the pasta served with the salmon is homemade, and it was absolutely delicious. Just a heads-up—don’t rely on the hours listed on Google, as they're open longer than it appears; it's worth giving them a call!
This was our first visit since the new owners took over, and it was a fantastic experience for our 35th wedding anniversary! Larry and his team were wonderful. The food was outstanding, with the duck breast and halibut entrees being particularly delicious. We will definitely be returning soon! Thank you once again!
