Unfortunately, I found the sushi to be quite disappointing. The rolls were not tightly packed, and the rice lacked the necessary stickiness, causing them to fall apart as we were eating. The rolls did not impress me at all. On a positive note, the service was friendly, but it felt more like a takeout experience, so the interaction was limited to the transaction. Overall, Carp is just okay in my opinion. It feels like a place that might attract a lot of hipsters, likely due to its small restaurant vibe, but there’s nothing exceptional about it.
My top picks are the salmon poke and chirashi don. These dishes are so delicious that I could eat them over and over again – and I frequently do! Both options pair perfectly with the miso soup and the kale/green bean gomae side. If you have room for some rolls, I highly recommend the salmon/eel roll, crunch roll, and negitoro roll. Although Carp has a modest seating capacity, the quality of their food far surpasses the restaurant itself. They tend to be quite busy during dinner time, so I suggest being prepared to order takeout.
Carp, named after the owner Koch Yuki's hometown baseball team, is a delightful little spot that has thrived among Vancouver's many small sushi establishments, offering high-quality food at great value. I’ve lost count of how many chirashi bowls, Mount Pleasant combos, and spam musubis I’ve enjoyed over the years, but I know I’ll keep coming back for more.
Carp Sushi and Bento is a cozy Japanese takeout spot situated near Kingsgate Mall. A friend of ours raved about their sashimi and rolls, so M and I decided to stop by for a quick dinner after work. While we intended to be in and out, I found myself wanting to sample many different dishes from the menu. I can be a bit indulgent at times!
