As always, The Checkerboard, was incredible! As an appetizer, a family size order of onion rings was perfect. Hand-cut, breaded, and fried when ordered, they were golden brown and scrumptious! (I have eaten a lot of onion rings in this great Country of ours and by far The Checkerboard's are the BEST! For our main course, we enjoyed a large, half pepperoni and half Canadian bacon with sauerkraut, pizza which was a delight to the tastebuds. The Checkerboard is always worth the trip for the BEST onion rings in Iowa, if not America, and incredible thin crust homemade pizza! Treat you and yours tonight.
Visited The Checkerboard for a late dinner on a weeknight. We were seated quickly and the staff was pleasant. We received our food quickly. Quality of the food was decent. We ordered the Onion Rings and Cheese Balls for an appetizer. We ordered a few pizzas, corn dogs and some chicken tenders. We left satisfied with the amount of food and took some to-go boxes with us. If we are in the area again, we may try this restaurant again, and try some other menu items.
We’ve been coming here for years. Their food is ALWAYS consistent. Their onion rings and homemade ranch are easily the best we’ve ever had. My husband and kids love the Italian sausage pizza, and I love the Patty Melt sandwich.The staff is top notch, and the family that owns and runs the Checkerboard, is always so friendly. The decor has likely been the same since I was little, but now it’s a nostalgia thing. My kids love the old west/taxidermy animal look!
