The food is good, service is attentive and friendly, but sharp business practices are totally unacceptable. We had green papaya salad (good), spring rolls (very good indeed), vegetable croquettes (good), calamari (excellent) and Peking duck rolls (a little odd - very good duck, too much Hoi sin sauce and an odd fried pancake - but overall OK).Our waiter was friendly, checked regularly that we were happy with the food and brought the bill promptly when requested. That's where the problems started - we were a little surprised that the bill totalled $114, but then noticed GST had been added to the prices on the menu (which I thought was illegal). We were also surprised that the drinks cost $26 -...

We went to Chowhouse on Sunday for Brunch with a friend from out of town and upon arriving there was the immediate feeling of soon to follow disappointment. We were asked to come back in 15 minutes, this was completely acceptable as we hadn't made a booking. When we returned we were seated and sat waiting for about 20 minutes before the wait staff came over and asked if we were ready to order. Whilst waiting for our meals and drinks to arrive a coffee was spilt on the bar behind us which was left for such a long period of time that it dripped down to our table even though the wait staff had seen it but they seemed happy to just laugh about it and ignore it.The food was average excluding my me...

Was just wandering down James Street with friends i was visiting for the weekend when we couldn’t walk past the amazing aromas coming from within Chowhouse. Despite being busy and with no reservation, we were seated immediately and drinks were ordered. Great variety of cocktails – Blue Jeans is excellent but goes down too easily! The food was sensational and the wait time really wasn’t too bad considering the heaving restaurant complete with hens and large groups. Has the kind of menu that makes you come back so you'll try something different but order the same thing again because it's ridiculously good - pork belly - 'nuff said.Good location around other eateries so plenty of atmosphere and...

Rude maitre d' who pointed at our table (twice, after we expressed confusion - the table was 3m away) after taking an infinitely long time to look at a booking sheet (we arrived for a 5pm dinner). Apparently we were blessed to be allowed to dine here. Fusion food gone wrong (2 tablespoons of curry sauce tipped over a lamb shank and a thimble of rice). Wine improved the experience. I constantly state that we're spoilt living in Melbourne, where service culture is respected, and staff are both lauded and rewarded for their merits and their hard work. Don't give this place a go, unless it's raining and you need to duck for cover (as we did). Réservez une table maintenant

Given its location, I really wanted to like this place. Among bustling James street, surrounded by beautiful boutiques and other high quality hospitality establishments but Chowhouse leaves you wanting. Ordered 7 meals for our table and a few cocktails, 1 person was happy with their meal. The satay sauce needs work, dry, paaty and overwhelming with peanut taste. Poached eggs were over cooked. Had a dirty Martini which tasted like a jar of olive juice, mojito needs to have some sort of sweetener for its soda water base so ask for some sweetness if you order this. Service was passable but not attentive or personable.

Finally a breakfast menu that I struggled to choose from because there were so many left-field items I wanted to try. In the end I chose the breakfast burrito - slow cooked spicy beef wrapped in a tortilla served with 2 salsas, sour cream and a perfectly poached egg. Beautiful flavours and excellent. My children were happy too, one with waffles, the other with excellent quality smoked salmon on toast (not a menu item but we asked and Chowhouse happily obliged). Good coffee too. We'll be back.

We were in Brisbane for a girls weekend and stumbled on The Chowhouse for breakfast. The food was fabulous, try the Thyme Roasted Mushrooms with a poached egg and potato rosti on the side, so nice!!!!!! The coffee was good too, however we couldn't believe the service we got! So many restaurants don't have enough staff, The Chowhouse has the best service I've seen! So if you want great food, great coffee and fantastic service, you now know where to go in Brisbane for breakfast!

Went here for breakfast while staying in Brisbane with my girlfriend. We ordered a Breakfast Burrito, and Roast Mushrooms with Black bean salsa. The Breakfast Burrito was really nice, they didn't skimp on the avocado/salsa, it was big enough that I could barely finish it. The waiter was polite, but not very friendly. Not that he did anything particularly wrong, just he barely cracked a smile and said nothing more than a general "Good Morning" etc. Réservez une table maintenant

We had my work Christmas party and I can't say enough how amazing the food was! Finding somewhere that will cater for myself and two other staff members with allergies is always super hard but it was not a problem with Chowhouse and had already printed out menus for the things we could eat! The staff were attentive and the food flawless! All our plates were licked clean. Definitely recommend eating here and I will be back!
