You know, there are days I want a Vietnamese sandwich and I can easily buy five of them for $20 easily in San Jose. I can buy about the same in San Francisco at the fabulous and iconic Saigon Sandwich. But there are days when I want a super gourmet or high quality Vietnamese sandwich and Chuck's Takeaway offers that. I used to order the Vietnamese sandwich aka banh mi, a lot at Charles Phan's Out the Door restaurants back in the past. I have gone to Chuck's Takeaway twice now and it is not cheap but the ingredients are definitely high-quality. I've had the CP's #3 and also mom's meatballs and both are amazing. CP #3 has a really good flavor to it and I would prefer this one over the meatball...

TLDR: service is good and quick, sandwich is lacking something and I don’t like having a forced 15% service charge for just takeaway. Was helped quickly and ordered the crispy pork belly sandwich and a Vietnamese coffee. Only when i saw the total at almost $29 for $23 of sandwich and coffee did i see the 15% auto service charge which rubbed me the wrong way, especially for only having takeout. The food came quickly and digging in, the pork belly is definitely on point with crispy skin and tender meat. However the rest of the sandwich is lacking. A ton of cilantro with regular cucumber and jalapeño doesn’t add the acidity that pickled veggies would in a regular banh-mi. The bread had a nice cr...
And then there’s the Le Dip—where do I even begin? The sirloin is cooked to perfection and sliced so thinly that it creates a delightful mille feuille effect (if you've ever had mille feuille tonkatsu, you'll know what I mean). The horseradish sauce adds a perfect kick without being overpowering. All of this is tucked into a special Vietnamese baguette that differs from a traditional French baguette. It has a crisp, glass-like crust that shatters at the first bite, revealing a soft, pillowy interior. Eating this sandwich is an experience that leaves you feeling a bit wistful as you near the end, not wanting it to finish.
The place charges 15% service fee on takeout order and the charge is mandatory and hence taxable. I have not had such an experience for takeout and puzzled why such charge is not part of the food price on the menu. You order and only at checkout you realize an additional 15% is non negotiable and this is not dine in or delivery. It's not transparent and the food isn't good enough for me to return to the shop given the misleading price. Réservez une table maintenant
My favorite spot for a French dip sandwich—it's incredible! This place also bakes its own bread, which is the most amazing, lightly crispy baguette I've ever had. I would come here just for the bread alone. The sandwiches are a bit pricey, but they're worth it if you appreciate high-quality ingredients. Just keep in mind that it's takeout only.
I walked past this place and decided to try a new sandwich place got the vegan tofu skin and eggplant banh mi. I’ve never had a thick, patty like shape of tofu skin before but it was delicious. I couldn’t describe the flavor of the eggplant because I don’t know what it is, but it was incredible, and that’s all you need to know
Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches aren't meant to be extravagant, but The OG serves the best banh mi in San Francisco, without a doubt. Check out how they perfected their baguette; it's like biting into a crispy cloud.
The bread was so crispy. The fillings were perfect. Glad to have Charles Phan back in the neighborhood. Hope he adds some seating to make it more convenient to chow down immediately. Réservez une table maintenant
An amazing sandwich from the makers of The Slanted Door.
