The Clare Castle Hotel is a historic old pub and over 100 years old.Today on a cold wet Melbourne Day when we dined at this pub the wood fireplace was in action. Something about a fire going that increases the ambiance of a restaurant as well as making the environment lovely and warmWe purchased a scoopon voucher for $29 which included a main for two persons and a drink of wine or beer each. Wow this place is just a little bistro next to a gaming bar. Inconspicuously setup with mediocre decor but relevant to the building. Upon arriving we didn't know what to expect although the reviews on U S were excellent. Friday Night is Steak Night with $23 300g Eye Fillet which I went for. My wife went for the Atlantic Salmon on a Ricotta Pancake which was $26. I honestly have never come across better value for money meals. They were both cooked to perfection and faultless. My wife and I had a meal here after a hard day working... We were not let down!It was a quiet Wednesday night and the lounge was perhaps half full. The staff there were very friendly and allowed us to have drinks and meals on the one account which saves a lot of mucking around - good policy.I had the Chicken Parma and was hoping it was substantial as I was ravenous... I didn't expect it to be that HUGE though! I couldn't eat it all, even though it was quite a good one. Went to this hotel for lunch during the week, reminded us of an old wharfies pub. We were first in the door. At start the reception from one staff member was cold. Shown to table and before you could sit, she's asking what do you want to drink.The Menu was a surprise. Hubby and I both had steak, one with mushroom sauce the other pepper sauce. Damn how fine. Tender, well cooked, fresh salad great chips and the sauces were like old fashioned and really tasty and well made.The "cold" staff member warmed up as other guests arrived and became more pleasant as time went.Overall we enjoyed ourselves and we are going back for lunch again within next 3 weeks.Yes we recommend this hotel for a great lu... Took some friends for lunch.. Friendly ,happy service.. not rushed and not slow either. Good menu choices for starters ,mains and desert .. Steaks were tasty, tender and perfectly cooked . Fat chips ok, really good salad and excellent coffee.. .. Absolutely on par with Railway Club Hotel so definitely worth a go.. Decor is a bit shabby but with good customer support hopefully that will improve. I'm going back next week for sure.. Oh.. and prices are certainly very fair.. both food and wine.
Lunch there for a 2nd time today. The staff were more attentive which made our day better. Quite a few people in for lunch.The food is really amazing, Fresh Salad, Tasty and tender steaks cooked as requested, some of the best tasting sauces we have had.Service was fast and efficient.This is not the "Trendy" pub of today but a goodie from Yester year. Its clean and comfortable but more importantly Great food and service.Go and have some lunch there, I am sure you will return just like we will.
A local flavor of a country pub in Melbourne - Port Melbourne. The set up is what you would expect in a country pub BUT this is in inner Melbourne. The flathead with chips and salad was worthy of being in a 5star hotel; crisp on the outside and tender inside. The calamari with the same was more mediocre tho' Great find in Port Melbourne especially with all week long specials.
