As a regular to the Cornershop I was appalled by the service I received last Sunday. I usually visit twice a week minimum because their coffee is so good, it is a favourite of mine to bring friends or meet with business associates as well so it's not just my business I bring. I also stop by to get takeaway coffee a couple of times a week. My dining companion and I walked in on Sunday morning and overheard the waiter very rudely say to his colleague “I'll just put them in the courtyard.” He directed us to a table of four outside (opposite the toilet) and told us we could sit there. I asked politely if we could sit at the only other empty table (also of four) but inside not next to the toilets and the poorly disguised rubbish area. “That is a table of four.” He said obviously thinking that because I had asked to sit inside in the middle of winter I couldn't count. “Yes but so is the one you are asking us to sit on” I pointed out. He rolled his eyes at me and told me very patronisingly that people like to sit inside. Me being “people” who like to sit inside because it's the middle of August then said as politely as I could muster to this patronising jack@$# that I come here at least twice a week and asked if another table of two walked in (as the majority of customers were on a Sunday morning) would they get the table in contention. “Lots of people come here all the time” he snapped and by this stage I was so incredulous that I was being spoke to in this tone over two tables of the same size I couldn't actually say anything . “Sit wherever you want this is obviously your house”. He finally practically snarled and then threw the menus at us. Now I have worked in hospitality for several years and I know the customer is always right isn't the best principle - but by the same time yelling at a customer over two tables the SAME SIZE is pretty poor. And being busy is not really an excuse - if you only have tables outside tell me before I am sat (pretty standard curtesy) or that I may have to wait for a table of two to open up inside and give me the option to go somewhere else if you don't have the seating available. Which in the end I took because - hey I was in Yarraville there are cafes everywhere and you can sit inside and NOT have a menu tossed across a table at you. And low and behold as we left another couple of two walked in they would have probably sat on the table of four inside while we shivered outside… PS. I ended up sitting inside nice and toasty at Little Advi across the road whose breakfast is amazing, their coffee is pretty good and their staff aren't arrogant pricks :)

The cafe was busy when we visited but we got a table straight away as we were happy to sit outside (super cold day). Our waitress gave us menus but didn't ask us if we wanted coffees which was strange. We sat and waited for some 25 minutes with no service or anything. I had to flag down another waitress serving a different table before we could finally order - tables seated well after us ordered and got their food before we could even order a coffee. I get that they were busy but the lack of service was really disappointing and because of this, I won't be coming back here.

Lunch today at Cornershop was simply terrific. It was very busy and we had to wait 10 minutes of so for a table for four in the courtyard. The service was pretty darn good given how busy it was. Was scarred a tumble of plates and enjoyed each one. The make great coffee and the others told me the chai was first class. Yarraville village has a loverly, friendly vibe with many very good eating houses. This is certainly one and we'll be back.

Had breakfast here on a Saturday morning. The coffee was fantastic, probably the best I have had in Melbourne, actually. Loved it. My breakfast dish was "Spiced cauliflower and potato hash, poached eggs and beetroot raita". I was very surprised by the papadams! I expected a mashed & fried cauliflower/potato mix type thing, but what I got was very delicious! The eggs were poached perfectly, yay!! Thoroughly enjoyed.
