I came to Vancouver Island to take my friend out for her birthday and to celebrate mine also. She suggested Cuckoo and I had heard great things about it. We ventured off and when we pulled up found parking right away. As we entered the restaurant we were greeted by several people, we asked to dine al fresco on the patio and the gentleman went to go find us a table, the next host came by and said it was impossible for us to sit on the patio as it was full. This is a great place with very good food so when we were looking for a place for two couples to celebrate an anniversary we called for a reservation. We couldn't get a table outside but were promised a window table so went ahead and reserved. When we get to the restaurant we saw a nice open four top by the window (the only one left). Ah, I said to the host, that must be our table! Um, ah, not sure let me check. I pointed out we had been promised a window, the reason we booked. He consulted someone else who told him to seat us at at inside table around the corner. None of the tables had reserved signs on them, so no idea why (nor were we given an explanation). I wanted to like this place so much. Great setting! Beautiful Patio. What a great place to dine with friends on a gorgeous summer night in such a glorious part of the world. Sadly, the food was a horrible disappointment. The first clue was the fact that our food came about 5 minutes after ordering it. It was a very busy evening which told us this was not very fresh. I had the seafood pasta and while the seafood was fine, the pasta was an over cooked bowl of mush...the worst pasta i can ever remember eating. Worse than hospital food or my old dorm cafeteria. We were lucky to get a table, as a reso had just cancelled. So definitely call and make a reservation. We should've known better, so that's not their fault, at all. The service was very friendly, and fast ... but it was SO fast, it really made you wonder how much was pre-cooked and just sitting back there. The table next to us thought the same thing. The food isn't amazing, just average. The server wasn't super familiar with the drink menu. Both my boyfriend and I agree that our meals weren't worth nearly $20 each, especially for the portion size. Reading many great reviews I expected a high quality mealThe spinach salad was alright nut nothing special with respect to flavor, ingredients or presentationService was slow and inconsistentMy husband's Caesar platter was not great . We had a wonderful evening strolling the market area, spotting the goats and having a lovely meal at Cuckoo. We finished our night with gelato and we were very happy. We didn't have a reservation and they were able to accommodate our party of 6 quickly and promptly on a Wednesday evening. The kids loved their food and the adults loved their pastas! We eat out frequently and we all loved the fresh/ quality and mostly local ingredients in our dishes. We look forward to returning with more friends next time.
Having eaten at Cuckoo in the winter, we had never eaten here in the summer, in the garden. Having reserved, we were seated immediately and were well served by the abundant servers and table managers. Our meals were on the timeline we expected including the gluten-free pasta option order (including the garlic toast). An enjoyable experience for a group outing.
On the evening of August the17th 2017 I had reserved a table for 13. It was a family & friends get together, I was looking forward to a very special evening. First of all the table arrangement was poor, the food was even worse, our server was okay, but lacked the experience.I live in the area, but would never go back, or recommend this restaurant. A busy place but very good. The food is authentic Italian with a little Canadian spin. The restaurant looks like a place in Tuscany and the staff is friendly and we'll trained. It's a busy place and you better call well in advance for reservations. They have a good wine list and I even was able to get my preferred Campari.
