I went to the restaurant for happy hour with my friend and decided to order the California Pad Thai. About thirty minutes after finishing my meal, I started experiencing terrible stomach cramps, to the point where I couldn't even stand up. The next day, I realized that my discomfort may have been due to my intolerance to MSG. I called the restaurant and the host confirmed with the cook that they did use MSG in that dish. I explained that they should have a warning on their menu for customers like me who have serious intolerance to MSG. Although a small restaurant, the 2 story ceiling gives the feeling of a larger space. The entire interior is dark: walls, ceiling and floors with only low lighting plus a small candle on the table. Strange female bondage paintings, unappetizingly on the walls. The menu contained an interesting mix of appetizers, salads and entrees, all of an Asian-fusion style. The wine list is adequate and relatively inexpensive, in part due to the lack of any high end offerings. The wilted spinach salad contained a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms. At first look, the place is beautiful, with high ceilings, brick, zen statues. Then, you look a little closer and you start to feel like you are in an Anne Rice vampire novel. All the portraits have an s&m, dark feeling to them. all of them. there 's no serenity here. Food was good, except for the recommended potato fried snapper. Way too much potato. I enjoyed my basil mignon and the ahi and popcorn chicken were tasty. Service was fair/poor. When asked for more silverware, the waiter responded with there might not be enough. You 're obviously paying high rent in Pasadena and you can 't give me an extra fork? Maybe spend less on the bondage paintings.
We love Equator! The prices are cheap (most plates cost less than $15), the food is great, and the ambiance is very unique. The service is almost always good if not great! Mondays they have 1/2 priced drinks (all of them and they mean all of them) and 1/2 priced appetizers lots of great ones to choose from. And, my favorite bartender is there on Mondays (Nina). If Jason is working when you come you must stop and tell him hi . We have become regulars now they even know us by name! I would highly recommend this place!
I've eaten at Equator in the past and was very disappointed with my last experience. I went 7/16 (a Tuesday night) which was $1 martini night-there's a reason they're offering them for $1-I'd doubt if there's any alcohol in them they do NOT taste good. The appetizers we ordered were mediocre at best and the service out on their patio was SLOW. I used to recommend this place to others. Now I question whether I'll ever go back.
Equator is a vital part of Old Town due to its excellent coffee, impressive bar service, and its role as a meeting spot for locals. It has become a go-to spot for myself and my friends, especially with its $1 martini and jazz-wine nights during the week. The staff are friendly and attentive, making it easy to meet new people. Overall, Equator offers great food and drinks for a fun and social gathering experience.
The restaurant did not honor my reservation. At first, the host told us that they didn't have any tables left. Then he gave us a table, but then explained that it would be a really long time before any food could be prepared. We subsequently decided to leave and go to another restaurant.
Terrible food, really a bar not a restaurant. We will never go there again, Open Table description does not match reality. More than a heavy hand in the kitchen. It's a shame, great location and interesting decor but food and drinks are terrible. A waste of money and time.
