We've been fans of G Men for years now they have great ramen, and the vibe is pretty authentically Japanese. My kids love the karaage chicken, and my husband gets the shio ramen. I love the tantanmen. The waitstaff is great; most of them are native Japanese speakers, which I love for getting to practice Japanese with them. My one complaint is that they no longer accept credit cards. Around 4 5 years ago, it seemed like they were having issues with them I remember some sort of sign about a security breech. Apparently more recently they'd only accept cards with photo ID...there was even a sign over our table stating that credit cards would only be accepted with photo ID. We had relatives visit...
The flavors and offerings were good. But the portions were quite large. One upside is we went to three different Ramen places in one night because the first two we tried did not accept credit cards, and if you paid cash they exchanged 1 USD 1 CAD. The exchange rate was actually 0.75 USD 1 CAD, so these previous places were charging a 25% exchange fee, effectively. A big no go. But G-Men ramen did take cards, so I would highly recommend coming here if you are from out of town and in Richmond. Service was great. All places had lines (even on a Tuesday night) so be prepared. But it is worth the wait at G-Men Ramen.
I find myself in a different city, states, and countries and find myself drawn to local places. If you are in Richmond and want a nice warm bowl of ramen to stop on by you should not be disappointed. The broth is the first thing I taste at a Ramen shop as it is the key to good ramen. The oil separation and the mixture of flavors were robust and exquisite. The ingredients tasted fresh and the noodles had an almost freshly pulled/made texture and taste (this was not confirmed if they are freshly-made). I will find myself sitting down at this place hopefully very soon.
We went to Richmond one Saturday in May to stop here for lunch. The place is tiny, be prepare to wait. We were a party of five, if we wanted to sit together there would be a long wait, so we divided our party, two sat at the bar and three sat at a table, I ordered Shoyu Ramen and Avocado Caesar Salad, the ramen was average but came with egg, that was very good and the salad was also good because I like the dressing. Due to Covid we didn’t experience the hustle and bustle of the G-Men Ramen as it usually is BUT the cuisine was superb! Never went there when it wasn’t. The Pork Shoyu Ramen was bursting with flavour that warmed your insides and the Chicken Karaage was so meaty and tender... Mmmmm.. Always left there satisfied. The Staff were most Friendly and accommodating. Excellent service.
Not the best ramen, surprisingly this is supposed to be their speciality! I find their ramen is a bit over cooked and also the soup stock is not hot enough, seems like the noodles were pre-cooked and became soggy! Topping are all very average and lacks character, we came here for lunch and we had to wait for 10 mins. so if you are in a rush you may want to find another place.
The broth was thick and noodles were soaking up the broth. It was flavourful and heavy. They didn’t have a lot of drink options due to Covid and there was a small wait, but worth it. Will come back again when in town. Tons of parking behind and on the street in front. Service was what would be expected from a ramen shop.
