My wife and I went to Giovanni to celebrate our anniversary and my birthday and were really looking forward to a great evening and meal.We had been in their pizzeria a few times and really enjoyed their products.This time, after reading an article in the local paper, decided to try the restaurant.Our server advised that one of their special was the lobster fettuccine, which had also been mentioned in the newspaper article.We both decided to order that.After the very attentive server had brought us the appetizers we had also ordered, he presented the main dish. Okay. This is a bit of a tough one. Mostly good. A little not so much. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated. However: our table for four was next to a very loud kitchen ( to be expected ) but also next to the door to the lounge and on the pathway to the washroom. It's not exactly a treat to see men coming out of said washroom adjusting themselves. I'm sure the all washed their hands.....So, my mother in law suggested we move outside. Our server ( she was great) offed us a great table at the front of the room. Too bad it wasn't offered upon our arrival. There were two open. Once we changed tables, things improved immensely. Nice bruschetta given, very tasty smoked salmon chowder and calamari...
The food was very good and portions were generous. Service was attentive, but one of the people in our party has celiac disease, and cannot tolerate any food containing gluten. The menu does offer gluten-free pasta, but the server was unsure of which dishes would be suitable for a gluten-free meal. She did, however, check with the kitchen before we ordered. The wine list is limited, but we were offered the option to taste the wine before ordering a full bottle. Went on a Friday night, table of 4. All had starters - meatballs were tasty but very dry, caprese salad was good. 3 of 4 had veal, either parmigiana or funghi - the meat was done satisfactorily but there just seemed to be little taste to it, as though the chefs had forgotten to season it. Even the sauces were bland. Finished off with chocolate mousse and tiramisu. Both were good.This restaurant had been hyped as the one to go to in Qualicum Beach. Regrettably, it was an average dining experience. That said, the server Jenny was outstanding.I might go back to see whether or not it was simply an off night, but am in no hurry to do so. We had dinner at Giovanni's after a change in ownership and found it to be an excellent experience. The menu choices were varied, wine selection good, and the food was well prepared and superbly presented. Our server was attentive but not invasive, pleasant but not gushy. Our son and daughter-in-law, who dine in good restaurants in Montreal, both commented on the quality of the food and service.We strongly recommend this restaurant for anyone wishing a memorable Italian meal.
We stumbled upon this great spot for lunch. We had amazing service and outstanding pizza, one Hawaain, one pepper & one special. Well priced and the best pizza we've had in a very long time. Lovey surroundings and absolutely spotless, even noticed the waitress washing walls by the table! Stop in the lounge for a lunch time pizza, so very good. Well done Giovanni's, we hope to return again!
We stopped in for lunch at Giovanni's, first time and we were very pleasantly surprised! We ate the best pizza in the lounge area, which is a very cool atmosphere. I don't normally eat the crust but I devoured the entire piece, crust and all. It was so addicting, I couldn't stop eating! The service was great too! Can't wait to try the dining area!
