These people are completely unprofessional and uncaring. I went to purchase the only food allowed to me as a day visitor at their outdoor grill, a food trailer or roach coach. At lunch time it turned out the thing was closed and the only person who was getting any food at all was the young adult staffing it when I went around to the back to find out why they were closed. He was shoving a burger into his mouth as he explained it took 45 minutes to cook his burger because his grill ran out of gas. He said there would be no food today but he was sure to get some for himself. I've been going to Star Island since the 80s. I grew up going there, worked there as a summer job in my 20s and returned as a guest. WOW has the quality of service fallen off a cliff! Staff used to be super friendly and felt like family. I guess due to budget cutbacks, they're paying for the cheapest people possible who don't care about the island and community. FOOD IS ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. Bring your own. And remember there is nothing to eat at all at night (and dinner is at 6:30). I can't stress enough how bad the food is. They literally can't cook rice it was crunchy! I thought we were safe on sandwhich day but the cold cuts were gross and bread stale. Everything used to have a homemade feel...
Unlike some reviewers from 2022, I found the food to be quite good. Attendees at the conference informed me that a new chef has significantly improved the meal offerings. The menu is sensible, focusing on American classics appropriate for cafeteria service. I was pleasantly surprised to come across medium-rare roast beef and good salads, along with excellent baked goods. There are also plenty of vegan and gluten-free options available.

I visited this location hoping for a peaceful and picturesque escape, but what I encountered was quite disappointing. I won’t be coming back unless there’s a change in management. The place was so overcrowded that I struggled to find a quiet area to sit. The hotel restaurant offered only one lunch option: grilled cheese. The facilities were dirty and poorly maintained. The entire island had a strong odor of garbage, and the main porch, walkways, and even the rocks by the water were permeated with the smell. I just wanted to second David W 's review. The place is gorgeous but the food was unacceptable. Several meals were inedible. The food was often cold. If you are a vegetarian you are out of luck. I often asked workers what was in the gluten free area and they couldn 't tell me. I even wrote to them when I returned but never heard back. And you are stuck unless you want something from the snack shop. I see that they have a new chef this year so I may give it another try, but I WILL bring food with me.
Although I've never attended a conference or event here, it's a great place to visit on a day cruise from Portsmouth or Rye. You can go into the first floor rooms and sit on the magnificent open porch to enjoy the views and the cool breezes. It used to be the Oceanic Hotel, one of the last of the great grand hotels in the country. This time around, we took the Portsmouth ferry and stayed a few hours.
This is hands down the best veggie burger I've had all summer! You go for one, and then you keep coming back again and again for the amazing experience and top-notch service! It certainly doesn't hurt that all the staff are incredibly lovely! They’re open from 11 to 3, depending on the weather.
Big upgrade over last year- the new cart set up is much more efficient. Very solid lobster rolls. Need to be patient with the staff, but I was very satisfied with the experience, and the views are phenomenal.
