As a Continental Airlines pilot, our crew layovers in Frankfurt, Germany were at nearby Mainz-um-Rhine. Usually, the entire 777 crew (about 7 flight attendants and 3 pilots would head over to our favorite restaurant, where the most popular menu item was a chicken schnitzel smothered in a brown gravy with lots of peppercorns in it. VERY DISAPPOINTED in this place. They open at 4pm and we arrived at 4:30pm when it was more than half empty . They didn’t have the special cheese for the speatzle so we ordered simple potato pancakes, a pretzel, 1 cup of borscht, a Radler and a soda. The owner HEIDI took our order and waited on us. More than half and hour later, she commented that we did not have any of our food and seemed surprised. Meanwhile, we observed that literally ALL of the other people around us who had come in AFTER us had been served immediately. By chance found Heidi’s German Restaurant and WOW!! From the minute we got there we knew we were in for a treat! Ray our server was absolutely hilarious, attentive and made our night! The food was beyond delicious, authentic and just so good! It brought my husband back to his childhood! Maybe don’t order the mango daiquiri…jk!! It was very good! You actually should have Ray make you several!!! We will definitely make this a regular place to eat at!!
Loved it!! We had the pretzel, potato pancakes and the jaeger schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle and it was all delicious. We also enjoyed tasting the German beer and wine.
