We lived in Hohenschwangua near both castles and told that Schwangau had many restaurants. (only 3-4 minutes drive) All looked pretty full so we decided to park the car and go to the main road to find a restaurant, most places... needed reservations or were full, a place recommended Helmer Hotel Restaurant, which was just a road from the main road. We were lucky they had room. The service was good and the meal was good. Beer was great! I went for the croquette and carving, but I found the oil in both. There was a self-serving salad bar that was very good. The server was able to come back earlier at our meal when the guys wanted a different beer and had to wait. The location was ideal and the restaurant was nice and cozy. I think there was a wedding or event in one of their banquet rooms. I wasn't disappointed at my meal, but would try somewhere else next time.
We stopped a long journey after reading the big reviews, just to be turned away from a very unpleasant and unhelpful waitress. Apparently, only hotel guests can eat here. You should update your website to notify people of it. We ended the street in another restaurant that was wonderful and the waitress was delightful. A little kindness and simple annoyance goes a long way.
I was really looking forward to a good Schnitzel (and it was) but surprisingly my favorite part of the meal was the salad. The addition of pickled beets and sauerkraut to a regular green salad really makes a difference. The service was great. They were...always ready to help you but didn't constantly bug you either and they didn't try to rush you out the door either.
