Yes this is a pub, but the food is above average and the view to the beach is nice too. The Miso braised pork was very tender, the fish and chips were a generous serve however the Henley Hot Pot ( basically a thin fish/shellfish stew) was lacking volume. This could easily be fixed by adding some noodles to the broth, which would make it more like a Chinese Hot Pot. 2 of the group indulged themselves with the sweets on offer and were very happy that they did. The coffee was good too.The chief drawback of the dining area is that it is very noisy. Lots of hard surfaces which bounce sound around. This is an issue in many eating places, not just at the Henley. I wish that hotels/restaurants would emply a sound engineer to look at their dining areas and to put in the appropriate sound damping for the situation.
After hearing very mixed reviews, we tried the Henley. One of the diners was very reluctant after a terrible experience a few years ago. New fresh staff made a difference. Food was served hot and exactly as ordered with a smile. We started with the platter which was enough for 4 if you cut a few items in half. I then had the steak and ribs which were tender and delicious. The others tried the trio of seafood and were impressed. Not room for desert. Wine prices were reasonable and the list fair. Each night has a different offer. Sunday nights kids ate for free, so there were a few families in attendance. Tables were spread out and venue was warm.We will venture back another night.
We decided to try the Henley Beach Hotel with hopefully a view of the water. We did get a table but we were astonished at how many tables were reserved on this cold, Winter Wednesday. The service was adequate and the menu offered a senior's special $12 menu, clearly why there were so many bookings.The wine list was comprehensive for a suburban pub and the food was good, not great. Bye the way, we didn't get a table with a view of the beach due to the reservations.
