"第二次來訪吃過最有名的炸雞,炸的超好吃!非常日式薄薄的外衣,咬下去是有汁的。這次點蓋飯和烤魚(Saba ),美味唯一差的是我的點菜能力,誤會會有醃製小菜,又不好意思講太久!"

As I’ve mentioned in the past, Hi Genki is a bit of a hidden gem tucked away next to the National Nikkei Heritage Centre. That’s a slight misnomer as plenty of people are aware of the great food here now and lineups during lunchtime are not unexpected.Run under the same umbrella that operates the Fujiya stores, you can be sure to find some really tasty Japanese food here. Although don’t come here expecting to find a myriad of sushi rolls… they focus on traditional items such as donburi, udon, and curry dishes. I suppose this makes perfect sense since they also cater to the nearby Japanese senior centre. After mentioning this place to my sweetie many times, I finally brought her here for lunch and started out with the Agedashi Tofu. The Pork Katsu Don ($9.50) was a surprising large bowl filled with a deep-fried, tender pork cutlet smothered in a Japanese curry sauce. To say this dish was filling is an understatement. While I’m usually more a fan of Thai-style or even Indian-style curries, I really enjoyed the aroma of curry wafting up to my nose when this dish arrived.I wound up ordering the Don Don Udon ($12.95), partly because I thought the name sounded kinda cool. If you haven’t figured it out yet, this meal actually comes with two donburis and an udon. Specifically, a croquette curry don, a spicy satsuma don, and a mini udon. The croquette curry was very similar to the pork katsu don as it shared the same curry sauce. The mini udon was sublime with a light and subtle broth and slightly chewy udon noodles. My favourite was the spicy satsuma don with stir-fried fish cakes and onion in a sweet and spicy sauce that enveloped the fish cakes. If you’re a fan of satsuma, you’ll adore this dish.We wound up having to take some of the curry dish to go.

If you visit Hi Genki on the weekends be prepared to wait to be served as the restaurant primarily serves meals to it's residents but also offers a dining experience to visitors. This is an excellent opportunity to savor home style food.

Very unique venue, to be held in the canteen of a Japanese elderly home. Pork cutlet curry on rice was amazing, and very sizeable portion too! First time trying agedashi MUSHROOM! Ya, it's awesome.

Took a colleague to lunch here while shopping at the Japanese store in the same complex. A hidden location for a great sushi meal!
