I had lunch there after a winter stroll in the lovely Appenzell area. The Gasthof is a mere 10 minute walk from Gais railway station. The restaurant is small but with a warm and cozy atmosphere. Thumbs up for the warm welcome by the tenant lady, who was friendly and efficient throughout the entire lunch. Her husband is the Chef de Cuisine; he took the time to come out and greet all the guests, which is always a much appreciated gesture. For lunch, you may choose between 10 set menus, all beginning with a soup (it was a delicious tomato soup when I visited) and mixed salad. As main course I chose a veal schnitzel in morels sauce with homemade noodles. The veal was cooked to perfection tender...
Kroketten, Hollondaise, schwere Soßen zu leichten Gerichten - deshalb hab ich mir für einen Gemüseteller entschieden. Dieser war aber eher ein Sammelsurium aller Beilagen, welche ich bei den anderen auf den Tellern gesehen habe. Hat mich nicht überzeugt und lässt mich schlussfolgern, dass sie vegetarisch nicht können! Außerdem hab ich 19:10 bestellt und gegen 20:21 hatte ich erst meinen Gemüseteller. Für 25 CHF hätte ich mir mehr erwartet. Wir waren eine Gruppe von 10 Leuten und die Teller mit Fleisch sahen sehr gut aus. Mit den Soßen aber echte Kalorienfallen! We had been to this restaurant on 22 January, 2014. Our meal was inclusive of Salat and main course. We had meatloaf which was served with mash potato and vegetables. Portion wise was good and tasted delicious. The other main course was a Schnitzel a Swiss Local Speciality from that region. Both meals were cooked perfect. We also had a nice local Berneckker red wine. Good service and the Chief Chef who is also the Owner of the Restaurant came out to greet all the guests. The Restaurant provided excellent and friendly service. The Restraurant was cosy.
Auf Grund der Bewertung im TA haben wir uns für den Hirschen entschieden.Das Restaurant ist sehr gemütlich und der Service sehr herzlich.Hier wird Gastfreundschaft noch gelebt. Das Essen und der Wein waren preiswert und sehr gut.Hier bekommt der Gast zum Wein noch eine Karaffe Leitungswasser umsonst, ohne lange Ausreden der Gastgeber.Wir kommen gerne wieder.
