It's hard to go past Taka's when visiting the Old Shanghai Food Court in Freo but we decided to try the dumplings at this relatively new Hong Kong eatery. At $4.50-$5 per serve, we were hoping for something special. Alas, no. The pork and mushroom dumplings were delicious but the shanghai dumplings tough and bland. The seafood dumplings were likewise disappointing.
Service was brusque, without a smile and It took just over 20 minutes from taking our order (of only 3 things!) to the buzzer going off. Being a Thursday lunch time, it wasn't at all busy. What was meant to be a quick snack turned into an extended period of food envy watching the Taka's patrons tuck in.
There's great potential...
This place is very popular. It's well situated next to the Fremantle markets and right near the cappuccino strip. Do grab a table before you order as it's hard to get a seat. The food is great and plenty of it and well priced. Anywhere from $10-$15 for a plate and there is even a bar for a cold one. You can choose from Chinese, Indian, Thai and Japanese. If going with children there is also an ice cream shop. If your in a hurry you can choose from the Bain Marie or if you don't mind waiting a bit you can get freshly cooked dishes. Will definitely come here again
A Fremantle institution! A variety of cuisines on offer, with many of the vendors cooking food to order. This place is always busy but there's plenty of seating both in and outdoors, along with a bar that will sell you an alcoholic drink as long as you're eating a meal. The best thing about this place is the price, yes it's still possible to get a plate of good tasty food for under $10! So grab your Chinese combo and beer, pull up a plastic chair and watch Fremantle happen.

I had never been in Old Shanghai in Fremantle before, but we were passing by so we dropped in. Old Shanghai is a collection of food joints, a bit like a food court but more interesting. You are almost certain to find something to tickle your tummy. Among other things, I especially liked the Vietnamese iced coffee, one of my favorite drinks, at Sweet Jane's. Old Shanghai is always busy, but you are likely to find somewhere to sit.
Went to the Upmarkets at least once a fortnight with friends while living in Freo, there's such a great variety of delicious food there's something for everyone. Some places make food to order and it's always a good time waiting with a frosty beer at a table outside and people watching. Awesome vibe, fresh food in one of the more interesting parts of WA, highly recommended for visitors and locals alike!
This establishment has a number of outlets specialising in Asian food to take away or eat in, including Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian and Indian. The food is reasonably priced and the service quick. The quality is just what you would expect from a fast food Asian setup.
Locals still call it the Upmarkets (old name) and it's a Freo institution. Plenty of choice, cheap, bar, inside of outside options. A good food hall and we visit at least once a month. Plenty of fresh cooked options.

I started coming here as a kid and since moving back it's a regular and affordable treat. Highly recommend getting your dish cooked to order and knocking back a beer while watching the human parade down the mall.
many a meal has been had in this food hall and i keep going back. Tasty Noodles does a great feed and cooks it while you wait so you know its fresh.
