Located within the idyllic canton of Appenzell, the village of Gonten is home to a little gastronomic gem: Bären. Tucked across the train station, the beautiful and impressive house combines excellent food and genuine hospitality. I had dinner in the gourmet restaurant a really...intimate and gemütlich dining room on the first floor. Thumbs-up to the wonderful service provided by Fabienne smiling, attentive and efficient. As starter I had the so-called Ei-Kreation tasty and delicate variation around the egg. This was followed by a revigorating Red Champagne soup. This is a place well off the normal tourist routes but truly one to go and visit. You wont find another 400 year old restaurant in Switzerland with such elegant, thoughtful and memorable food. Perhaps Michelin hasn't found it either!!! I would also doubt whether...there is another original wine cellar to match this one. And you can visit it and taste the wines before you sit down for lunch/supper. And there is a vast and truly epic wine list. In winter there is always a warming fire in many rooms and the staff are just simply a delight. The rooms are functional and very clean with all the amenities of a top class hotel, but you don't come here to sleep !!
This is a gourmet restaurant and well worth booking if you are in the area. Over the summer the front of the Hotel is a mass of flower boxes which are beautiful. Very tastefully decorated inside, everything about it is perfect and classy. Staff are...young, very well trained and considerate. Food was superb, plenty of time between courses with little dishes brought to change the palate or just give a different taste. My main course was steak which was delicious, well matured, cooked to perfection. There was a local trio playing plus yodelling which was foot tapping good.
we were in the bears in gonten to various occasions, mostly with friends, but also as a few of two. every time the recipe was warm, the service was excellent and the eating really good. our recommendation for fish lovers would be to taste the baked...sole, cooked to perfection and prepared wonderfully by the waiter. we must admit, however, that prices have reached an upper limit (especially for the wee), and we could reduce our visits, should they increase higher. but for a special occasion, this restaurant is really worth a detour. What a beautiful place in the small village of Gotten in the midst of Appenzell ! The house has a 400 year history and was recently taken over and renovated by an Appenzell entrepreneur with a vision to keep this gem in perfect shape. Very...friendly service, great wine cellar and really good food. Do not miss !!!
