Hue Thai is now my go-to spot for banh mi. I opted for the thit nuong dac biet and it did not disappoint. There's something special about the dac biet banh mi here. I couldn't pinpoint it, but I think it might be the sauce they add that gives it a hint of soy sauce flavor. I haven't encountered this at any other banh mi spots, but it instantly brought me back to the streets of Vietnam where I would always grab a banh mi from the local vendors. The familiar taste of the sauce transported me right back to those bustling streets.
I was looking for a lunch spot on my drive back from Palm Springs to LA and came across this place on Yelp. The Charcoal Pork Bahn Mi I ordered was just okay, served on a mediocre baguette. I also tried the giant steamed pork bun on a whim, but it didn't impress me either. The restaurant lacks atmosphere and there are no tables or chairs, it's strictly takeout only. There is plenty of parking available, as most of the other businesses in the strip mall have closed down.
Cash only. The best banh mi according to Eater and it did not disappoint. The bread is freshly baked and the ingredients are fresh. The #1 comes in a roll while the #11 is a baguette. The #1 is classic while the #11 has less bread in each bite. It would be better if they layered the ingredients better, all the greens like cilantro and jalapenos were pushed to one side.The service is fast. The atmosphere is bare bones but inviting.
The house special banh mi I ordered tasted great. Right up until I was about to take a bite and I saw a long grey hair in the middle of the sandwich. A 5 star experience turned into 2 stars (I’m being generous). They need to implement better hygiene and food safety policies in the future. Réservez une table maintenant
The atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely, although it's true that you can't actually eat it. The woman who served me was very kind. I ended up taking home three scrumptious baguettes, which I found to be a great deal. I will definitely return to this establishment in the future.
