I don’t think there’s a place I haven’t been to in Geneva. Somehow I missed out on la Chaumière until now even though the Chef, Serge Labrosse, is more than well known and used to run the legendary Buffet de la Gare des Eaux Vives, as well as le Flacon in Carouge, which I always felt was too small for him. Maybe the fact that his fairly new place is still somewhat under discovered is part of the magic: you don’t have to call weeks before to have a place, it’s not overcrowded with show offs and you’re guaranteed to spend a lovely evening or lunch without the annoying Geneva fluff. I have heard a lot of good recommendations for this restaurant, so we decided to try it for our year-end dinner at work. The service was very good and we enjoyed ourselves otherwise, but gastronomically I do mot see a Michelin star level. Every time I go to a Michelin star restaurant, the food may or may not be to my tasting, but it never has obvious flaws. This time, absolutely all my side dishes were over-salted to a degree that I had to leave them all on the plate after trying. I didn’t want to cause a scene, so we didn’t say anything, but luckily I wasn’t very hungry.
La Chaumiere has an excellent location close to the Saleve, with a large terrace. We ate in the wonderful inside dining room which has been thoughtfully arranged so that the tables are well separated. We enjoyed the six-course tasting menu that included two sea food oriented dishes, beef, mushrooms (it is the season), cheese and dessert, alongside a wine-pairing. It was all very well presented, and the wine pairing was appreciated because of its focus on Swiss wine. If I have a criticism, it would be that the portions were too much! We definitely hope to return!
