Hiking along the Bern-Solothurn railway track, I stopped for lunch in Utzenstorf, as Baren is featured in several gourmet guides including Michelin and Gault-Millau.As its name implies, Baren is a charming family-owned Gasthof, offering best Swiss hospitality.Thumbs-up for the friendly welcome and enjoyable service during the entire lunch: efficient and professional, yet unobstrusive. The tempting menu is focussing on seasonal produces, e.g several venison dishes during my October visit. As starter I chose the "Hirsch magatello" - air-dried deer served with pumpkin chutney and corn lettuce. As main course I had the "Rehschnitzel Mirza" - deliciously tender venison escalopes served with the traditional sides of vegetables and spaetzle. Fortunately I had some room left to indulge in the dessert carrousel - a sample of tempting desserts such as tiramisu, chocolate cake, panna cotta.Unsurprisingly, Switzerland is an expensive destination and Baren makes no exception - the bill amounted to CHF114. But both food and service are well worth it.I have definitely included Baren in my favourites.
