"A chance visit ended with and excellent meal at a very reasonable price. With parking close by this made an excellent lunchtime stop. The help yourself buffet starter was a meal in itself , followed an excellent grilled meat served with their own unique style of french fries. The vin de table was very palatable as was the creme brullee to finish"

We stayed a couple of nights in Bazas during our cycle tour of Aquitaine and just happened to stumble across Le Maquignon. It offered a set menu at 15 Euros per head which included a 1/4 carafe of rose vin de table. The buffet was simply amazing with a high tech buffet servery that had a plastic umbrella like structure that motored up like something out of 'Thunderbirds' to give access to an excellent entree buffet.Choice for the main course on our menu was a little limited and there was the choice of chips with it or errrrr. chips with it. The buffet more than made up for this. The more expensive menus offered a wider choice of 'plats'.We chose to sit on the 'terrasse' which was actually an old open area just across a back street from the restaurant. We were at Bazas for two nights and we had hoped to eat there again on our second night but to our disappointment the place was closed with a sign in the door that they were not opening that evening due to 'sante', i.e bad health. We hope that they are now feeling better. All in all a great find in a small French town where there did not appear to offer much choice in the budget end of the market.

Booked in advance for the beef festival and requested the 20 euro menu. We were a bit shocked when we were taken out of the back of the restaurant, where the 35 euro people were eating, to what could only be described as a shed...however, no need to be worried. Had great conversations with people sitting on either side then wonderful food. Beers and martinis for aperos, then a really rustic chicken broth...delicious, after that, a fantastic barbecued steak with home made chips, as much water, red and rose wines that we could drink, a fantastic local dessert, apple tart with filo type pastry and then coffees. Friendly efficient service, which was very impressive cosier in the numbers of people, and everything for a total bill of 25 euro per head. Will definitely be going back on a quieter day. If it is this good during the mentally busy festival...it must be superb when it is quieter...

Those looking for a fancy meal (and to pay about 3 to 4 times as much) served on white linen in a beautiful setting should probably head to Les Remparts. We weren't. Thus we were pleased with this unpretentious joint. For 15 Euro per person you start with an self-serve appetizer buffet (which had quite a selection- everything from snails to shrimp to rillettes, and a few salads). Save room, because the main course is also generous: the choice is from 5 different meat dishes (vegetarians need not apply), which come with garlicky potatoes and a bit of salad. Dessert and 1/4 liter of wine is also included. We ate out in the back area which has been described as a bit of a shed, but it faces onto an alley and you can see one of the old town gates. The only downside to our experience? The mosquitoes ate well that night, too. But I sure can't blame that on Le Maquignon.

We happened upon this restaurant as we walked into the town and it was a great little find. The only criticism would be the limited menu - if you want a Vegetarian or fish option you may be limited. We were limited to two beef and a duck option on the 15E menu. The buffet starter was absolutley fantastic and the waitress coped really well with translating our French :) Definitely recommend - very reasonably priced and lovely food
