My wife and I visited on 25 Sept. 2012 for lunch. The restaurant is situated on a rather dowdy street with several other restaurants within a stone's throw including Turkishe, Greek, Liberian, Spanish, Armenian and Savoiard! However, this restaurant is traditionally French and is smart and spotless inside. My wife is somewhat disabled but even at a busy lunchtime we were welcomed and a table for four was reset to make her comfortable. The welcome was warm and, we felt, genuine. The service was prompt and kindly. The set menus appeared good value but the a la carte dishes (exhibited on a black board) appeared to be expensive, even if they did have expensive ingredients such as foie gras; lobster; ris de veau.As I was driving we required only a half bottle of wine but few are available. The demi Listerac-Medoc which we enjoyed was pricey at 17€ for the half.We both choose from the 19,80 set menu and were very very pleased with both the value and the quantity being satisfied without feeling bloated. The chicken supreme in a fennel and leek sauce was superb. The desert of creme brule with (it was stressed) vanilla fresh from Madagascar was truly excellent, simple yet delicious. With wine, mineral water, mise en bouche, two set menus, coffee and petit fours our total bill of 65€ we felt to be good value. As my wife is a retired Cordon Bleu Chef we are not unaware of the appropriate standards for such a place at those prices. We came away well pleased and delighted with the kindness shown to my wife who was escorted out to the pavement on our departure.

Absolutely delicious food, good value. Serious food, artistically presented and delicious to eat. I took EricH's advice and had the St Jacques and I agree with him that they are amongst the best I have ever had. Simply served with some julienned vegetables they made a perfect main course. I had the Huitres Nagé to start with and that was very good and an imaginative thing to do with oysters. We were given a glass of Chamapagne as an aperitif and that did help to make the evening go with a fizz. My companion had the medallions of Monkfish with bacon, which he liked. It was lovely to have a meal which wasn't heavy so we both had desserts from a very tempting menu and both were lovely. Altogether a very nice evening, made to feel very welcome by the staff, who spoke good English if we needed it. This restaurant is well known by locals and you might need to book in busy times. Recommended by our beautiful hotel, it was only a short walk away.

This place was recommended by the owner of the hotel we stayed at, and after looking at menus of a couple of other restaurants in old town, we chose this. Not disappointed! Staff very welcoming, helpful, enthusiastic. Although we speak adequate French, they helped out in English to ensure we had the best experience, eg suggesting the best order in which to eat our cheeses! Delicious gourmet food, beautifully presented, unusual but perfect taste combinations, eg salmon and apple in one of our starters. Reasonably priced set menus for the standard of food. Lovely treat!

We had gone to this restaurant many years ago and were glad to find the time to enjoy the delicious possibilities again. This restaurant has all of the best-known elements: ambience, a well-considered menu, location and, most importantly of all, a name which is easily remembered. The French love to shorten words where possible. So, restaurant becomes resto or in this case Le Resto. Make sure you leave a lot of time to enjoy your meal. Then go and enjoy Niort, which is just as charming as Le Resto!
