We asked at the Gap Tourist Office for restaurant recommendations and were referred to Le Tourton des Alpes. What a find! The restaurant is nestled under an old stone arch in Gap's old town city center. You walk down a few stairs to find yourself in an old stone room with an arched ceiling. We were greeted warmly and the server did her best to help with language differences - she a French speaker and we as English speakers. The tourist office rep suggested we try the specialty of the region, called toutons - little pockets of filling that are fried - similar in shape to fried ravioli but with a different and much better taste. My lunch was a big plate of green salad surrounded by many of the toutons with potato filling. The Mr. had another house speciality which included a few toutons and a small salad but the main dish was like a heavy, deep dish crust-less quiche. It's filling was mostly cheese and vegetables - excellent! The Mr. enjoyed a glass of wine which he declared very good and very well priced. Our lunch specials came with coffee and dessert - what a treat! Dessert was a small bowl of raspberry ice cream with two pieces of sweet, crispy French toast, covered in raspberry purée. Pure heaven. Overall, it was a wonderful meal - good food in an interesting location, served by friendly waitstaff.

My great grandparents originally were from Gap before moving to the states and my great grandmother used to make for my mother a delicious deep fried ravioli type dish made with potato or plum mixture. Unfortunately, my mom only knew them as "tourtons" and had no idea how it was spelled ... Googling didn't help, nor did asking native Parisians or Niçois locals. We finally made it to Gap and discovered this excellent little restaurant that serves the very dish my mom was hoping to find! The atmosphere is very charming, at the end of a small alley and built in what looks like an old wine cellar. We both had the L'assiette du Champsaur, which included pork tourtons, potato tourtons, these other little potato sticks, thinly sliced cured ham, and green salad. It was delicious meal and a wonderful discovery. The price is very reasonable compared to what you would pay for lesser quality in the big cities.
