Having had a awful meal two days before at another restaurant /hotel in Argentat we were invited out for lunch at this restaurant. During the 24 years that we have lived in this area of France we have eaten here a few times. We have always found the food to be good but the service somewhat lacking. True to form, the meal was excellent but the service remains a problem. It's not the time it takes for the meal, we enjoy taking our time and our five course meal did take almost three hours, perhaps too long for some, but not for us. My main complaint is that whenever we go here you are shown to your table, menus are given and then, nothing! I really do not mind being given time to read the menu...
Like the hotel in which the restaurant lives the first impression was not great. It looks tired and old fashioned which could be easily fixed. Fresh tablecloths and removal of some clutter would be good. The service was slow to start but got better. Don't expect too much assistance with food or wine. When the bread was put down we nearly walked out as it was very stale and we ate none of it. However things improved. The entree of pan fried mushrooms and garlic was quite delicious. We both had the pan seared trout and this also was excellent and came with sides of creamy potatoes and a ratatouille which was unexpected. Nous avons déjeuné rapidement un samedi très chargé. Le menu est correct et la nourriture était bonne, pas de mauvaise surprise. Le restaurant recevrait certainement de bien meilleurs commentaires si les propriétaires expliquaient à leurs jeunes stagiaires qu'ils doivent être gentils et souriants envers les clients. La jeune fille qui s'est occupée de nous avait l'air tellement ennuyée, fronçant les sourcils et apathique ! Dommage. Elle ne faisait aucun effort, même pour parler distinctement quand il était évident que nous ne la comprenions pas. Elle a gâché chaque minute de ce qui aurait pu être un déjeuner agréable par une journée ensoleillée.
I have used this restaurant on previous occasions and have always been subject to delays, we would arrive, be shown to a table and left to ponder as to when or if we would be asked whether or not we would like a drink. I am really pleased to say that this has all changed. We arrived were shown to a table and within minutes our order for drinks was taken. Our order for lunch was not long in being taken, and the meal was excellent - which it always was. Again very good value for money and it is really pleasing that they seem to have sorted out the problem of leaving clients to sit and stew. I would recommend this restaurant to all.
We needed to eat in Argentat on a bank holiday Thursday, without having booked. Not a good idea. However, we were quickly installed on the terrace under a shade and nibbles were produced while we looked at the menu. This is obviously a great place to eat if you have the time, but we went for a salad - simple gésiers, magret, foie gras. It was copious and excellent and washed downed with a lovely rosé - Coteaux de Glanes - highly recommended.Next time we'll stay here so as to really do full justice to the restaurant, but for a light lunch, this was unbeatable.
Nous avons pris le menu fixe 2 plats Formule à 12€ le soir. Le vin était seulement à 4,60€ pour un demi-litre (une affaire en France)! La nourriture était excellente - soupe/salade, rôti d'agneau/bavette, excellentes pommes fouillade servies dans un plat en cuivre. Le service était un peu désorganisé avec nos plats arrivant à des moments différents. Pas d'éclairage à l'extérieur après le coucher du soleil, ce qui était un peu étrange. Nous n'avons pas non plus été servis dans l'ordre d'arrivée aux tables.
Sunday lunch menu at 29€. Amuse bouche followed by entrée and main courses, cheese and desert. All excellent. Unfortunately service was a little haphazard, long waits whilst some diners arriving after us were served before us, and not because of the dishes we chose. Waiter and waitress were, nonetheless, very pleasant. In their defence they were very busy both inside and outside. Would go back again but perhaps when they are less busy.
We ate at the outside tables on a hot humid day and like many others on the day we were looked after well by a tireless waitress. You could easily get by for lunch on the 9 euro Plat du Jour, but we enjoyed the full 3 course menu. Everything was keenly priced (house wine and coffee as well). Altogether a great place for lunch.
Alors que nous passions à Argentat à l'heure du déjeuner, nous avons décidé de nous arrêter ici pour manger un morceau. La nourriture était en réalité très bonne et je recommanderais volontiers leur restaurant. De bonnes portions à des prix raisonnables aussi. Le service était sympathique et efficace.
