The weather was beautiful when we visited Mauna Kea. To reach the summit, you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The road appeared dangerous, so we opted not to take any chances. Most car rental companies also don’t allow driving on non-paved roads, including the dirt road to the Mauna Kea summit, as well as the routes in the southwest and Waipio Valley. However, there is a short hiking trail that leads to a nearby peak opposite the visitor center. From there, we were able to watch the sunset, although it was partially obstructed by clouds, and we stayed for stargazing until 9 PM. This restaurant is not suitable for families or tourists. We visited with our family, and the journey took almost an hour due to the winding, narrow roads through rocky and dull terrain. There isn't anything worthwhile to see at the top, so don't expect to find anything enjoyable unless you take pleasure in a long, uncomfortable drive and the effects of thin air at high altitudes. Additionally, if you're hoping to see the actual volcano, be prepared for another hour of driving followed by at least a 4 to 20-hour walk. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

If you plan on hiking from the visitors center, make sure you are prepared!I got there 30 min before sunrise to acclimatize as well as check weather. Started at 6:30AM and got back around 2:30 pm, 8 hours total with breaks at a moderate pace. Amazing views, worth every second! Always check weather before you go, high winds and quickly changing weather are common.
