Mulata is an absolute gem in the Chicago area and a true treasure in Oak Park! I can't help but give them 5 stars because they truly deserve it. The chicken empanadas are simply incredible—so moist and bursting with flavor. As a Brazilian expat, the taste instantly transports me back to the flavors of my homeland. But it doesn't stop with the empanadas; the Bobo, PF, and Feijoada are all delicious, and I can honestly say I've never had a meal here that wasn’t outstanding. I enjoyed sitting at a high-top table by the window, where I could watch people strolling by and observe others sitting on the park benches across the street. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, though the outdoor area is uncovered, which might make it less appealing during Chicago's colder seasons. In the photos I shared, you can see that I ordered the Meatloaf sandwich. It was a standard burger—nothing particularly fancy—but still quite tasty. On another visit, I tried the Mulata Bella sandwich, which includes eggplant, portobello mushrooms, cheese, and arugula, and it was also delicious. This is a lovely coffee and snack spot located at the corner of Oak Park Avenue and Lake Street in Oak Park. They offer a wide variety of coffee, including both classic favorites and some unique options that you won't find elsewhere. There are also a few snack choices available. It's a great place to relax and catch up with friends or family. While there is outdoor seating available on the street, it can be a bit noisy, and pedestrians walk right by. Parking in the area can be challenging due to the limited street parking spaces. Overall, it’s a nice place for dining in.
I love popping in to grab a quick espresso or coffee. The beans they use for both are top quality. Be careful around lunch and early afternoon hours. Lots of guest ordering food items and that process usually takes a long time when there are more than three people in line. I wish they could implement a process to streamline this or a drinks only line because the length of time it takes to order and make a shot of espresso does not warrant a 10-15 min wait. As someone else mentioned, it seems like there are a lot of young people managing the restaurant. They ran out of chicken, but we weren’t informed until we inquired about our food after waiting for 30 minutes. On a positive note, the food itself is quite delicious. the cheese balls are amazing and the best part of the experience. they seem to have young kids running the place so it’s a bit disorganized. we had to ask about our drink order because it never came out. the sandwich was very good. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Food: 4 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4
