Relying on reviews of restaurants on Trip Advisor coupled with which restaurants had reservations available last minute on a Saturday night, we were fortunate enough to get a table here. The place is small with a welcoming ambiance and friendly staff. The kitchen area is open to the dining room and it was nice to see how well the kitchen staff worked together on a busy Saturday night. The menu was only in French but the staff was easily able to translate everything for us. I really liked that some dishes were offered in both a half and full portion. We were recommended Pastel by our receptionist (l'hotel particuleur) after we asked her to find us a restaurant that was vegetarian friendly (a hard task in France!) but also had a great choice for the non veggies. And this is it! Our friend , who is the vegetarian , was so pleased to have a choice other than raw veg! When we arrived the waiter had translated the menu for us into English (although no need) which was very kind . The menu is a choice of 4 at each course ...all excellent . Beau déjeuner tardif à Pastel après la promenade dans le musée d'art contemporain à proximité. Le menu est simple mais offre un excellent choix de deux entrées (lors de notre visite, une délicieuse soupe aux lardons ou une salade de betteraves avec du ricotta frais), et trois plats principaux : un poisson blanc frais avec chou-fleur et carottes marinés, ou un filet de veau et sauce aux herbes avec du miel sublimement présenté. This place was recommended to us by Anne, the waitress, whom we had met a few days earlier in another restaurant. The food is simply divine, the ingredients have been chosen carefully and grown organically. You can eat for €15 or €17 for 2 or 3 dishes for lunch (without drinks). The reason is that there is only a choice of 2 or 3 dishes per course. After walking at Quai des Chartrons on a sunny Sunday morning we tried to find an Italian restaurant recommended by TripAdvisor. Just to find out it was closed. Pastel was only the nearest second option, but it turned out to be a nice surprise. Small and cozy as any French bistro, the food was tasty and the wine was good. A Nice surprise to refuel our bodies and to prepare us to visit Cité du Vin, which is not far.
We stopped at Pastel for lunch prior to visit the CAPC which is 5 minutes from there. The place is really good : nice welcome, a short menu with fresh and local suggestions, affordable price for the quality, ... Pastel is definitely a place I recommend and I would love to visit again.
