The view at this historical site is stunning but that's all this venue is worth, don't waste your money eating here. I came out here with my family for afternoon tea to enjoy the scenery and was thoroughly disappointed. The food and tea were mediocre at best but it was the terrible service that made me regret coming. Since they don't take reservations and we had a large group, we made sure to arrive earlier rather than later. I checked in with the servers to ensure they would be able to seat a larger group. They said yes so we proceeded to wait in line. We just missed the first seating but were the first in line for the second and waited for 1.5 hrs. The view is the selling point of the tea...
After watching the filming of an ad for high tea at Prince of Wales, we had pretty high expectations of what was to come. We were quite disappointed; what we got looked nothing like what we saw them filming. The bread on the sandwiches was cold. The chicken salad was good, but the other two were quite bland. In the next layer, we had two more quite cold foods: an unremarkable scone and a tasty bisquit with duck and dried fruit and a tiny bit of clotted cream with a pot of jam. The top was the most disappointing of all, nothing like what we saw them filming. The afternoon tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel is a tradition in a hotel steeped in tradition. Other reviews of the hotel have noted it is a step back in time -- indeed, a step back to a more elegant time.The afternoon tea is one of those rare treats that is both elegant and accessible and relaxing and wonderful. The teas vary, depending on what you desire, and the sandwich squares and pastries are delicious. We've enjoyed high tea at this location before but this visit was slightly disappointing. The window sills in front of guest tables were covered with dust and dead flies/wasps - rather unappetizing while you eat. The Tea, sandwiches and treats tasted great but delivery of food trays was very slow this time (short staffed perhaps?). The other annoyance we had not noticed before was general tourists walking through and around restaurant tables while tea guests were seated and being served. Maybe it's just me - but I thought this was a bit rude/awkward? This isn't quite at the same caliber as Banff Springs Hotel but the location and views remain spectacular so it will always a favourite stoppin... Réservez une table maintenant
I had a family member from U.K. and when we arrived (September), we were told the tea was no longer being served. The hotel people had not informed the Parks visitor centre of this. My visitor was not impressed at the lack of communication, and was obviously disappointed. However, when I looked at the menu, I thought it was way overpriced. Instead, we had to settle for a cup of tea in a polystyrene cup from the gift shop and were able to enjoy the views for a fraction of the price! Don`t waste your money here.
From 1-5 pm the hotel offers an English tea service in its lobby. Seating is near the large south facing windows that provide a magnificent view of the Waterton and Glacier Parks' mountains and down Waterton Lake. We feel there is no finer view anywhere from a hotel. The view is just part of the experience. The tea was exceptional. The sandwiches, scones and deserts were excellent and all was only $30 per person Canadian. This should not be missed if you visit Waterton.
What a wonderful way to spend some relaxing time in the afternoon. The view is spectacular and the choices on our tea tray were delicious. A new experience for the men in our family (and they actually enjoyed it)! We looked at high tea in Victoria Island but the price was outrageous. We felt the price here was very reasonable.
No one can claim a more grandiose view than the restaurant at the Price of Wales Hotel. Looking at the head Waterton Lake, sitting in a historic hotel, eating the "tiers" at high tea - who can ask for more. Food was VERY well prepared and a nice assortment.
