Red Petite is close to the South Melbourne Town Hall, the home of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). During the term, students flock to eat in affordable places in their lunch hour so this tiny Thai cafe becomes very crowded. That's part of the fun! You might share a table with a stranger, or converse with someone nearby. There are lots of regulars who are not students, too, so it's an eclectic place. The menu is extensive. I scanned the rolls, baguettes and foccacia list and decided the cold day warranted a hot meal. There were pages of different goodies, all at affordable prices. My red curry was a soup, a bit like Tom Yum but less spicy and more creamy thanks to coconut cream...

This is truly a petite shop.Food is still very good. There's new additions to the existing menu. Both green and red curries are thick, creamy and tasty. The starters are all great, tapas style so great tasting plates. Lots to choose from. The tom yum soup could have a bit more tang and zest.Reasonable prices too.Only Visa or Mastercard accepted. Cash of course.Great attentive and friendly service, as always.Been coming here many times over the years - same lovely young Thai couple. There's small indoor seating as well as alfresco dining outside on the foot pavement, under umbrellas and noticed there's a gas heater too.
Quaint petite (I mean small) restaurant where the pavement is a necessary space for tables (must be cold on winter nights?). Service is good but busy - thriving takeout on a Tuesday night.Beer is extra cold! and a good selection for such a hole in the wall.We were disappointed with the beef Thai salad which was served with lettuce leaf salad - however, the beef with its crunchy rice particles was good. The chicken was fine but nothing to rave about.A decent quick and easy local Thai joint - worth a visit.
We stumbled on this tiny Thai restaurant near the South Melbourne Town Hall after visiting the local op shop. We timed our visit perfectly as the small amount of tables inside the restaurant were rapidly filled with the overflow of customers relegated to the plastic picnic tables and chairs outside. We chose vegetarian curries with jasmine rice from the extensive menu which arrived quickly and were delicious and very generous in size. Réservez une table maintenant
Happened on this place by chance even though I live in south Melbourne and what a find. Very small inside but nice atmosphere. Service is fantastic , friendly and prompt. The red duck curry and Pad Thai were as good as anything I have eaten in Thailand. With a shared starter and a bottle of wine the price of $70 was very good value. Looking forward to our next visit.
My fiance and I visited for dessert. He had coconut icecream and I had Brownie Cheesecake and a scoop of coconut icecream. I was happy with my choice and enjoyed the cheesecake but loved the icecream with the real coconut pieces. Service was good and they were happy for us to simply have dessert. We will go back !
Wow, I've lived in South Melbourne for a decade and have struggled to find a decent Thai place. Red Petite is AWESOME. My friend and I searched on trip advisor and that's how we ended up eating here. Everything was delicious, best tom yum and chilli basil beef. Do yourself a favour and try it for yourself.
A South Melbourne favourite that brings authentic Asian flavours to the table. As the name suggests the Cafe is quite small but BIG on humble charm and Réservez une table maintenant
