It almost breaks my heart not to give this restaurant 5 stars. It had so much potential, organic and local food (full disclosure, I love these types of restaurants). They have kombucha on tap which was quite good. The coffee was also very good. My husband and I had the soul bowls (he had the lunch one and I had the breakfast). It was delicious and tasty until my very last few bites when I noticed that there was Mold on my bread. To be fare the bread has no preservatives which makes it prone to this in a very short period of time, but the kitchen staff should KNOW this and catch it. Tonight was DATE NIGHT! (Now, thankfully, I'm with an amazing man who is also a foodie). I've heard so much about Soulfood, that tonight was our night. We got there decently early (about 5:45)and wayyyy past hangry. Our server was a total mood changer. She seriously had the BEST energy! She was knowledgeable on the menu, and the drink (lavender iced tea. Oh. My. Gawwwww) and guided us through our first visit perfectly. Our food came quickly after ordering, and we started to dig in. I was pretty much double fisting my nachos and dancing in my seat at this point. We were checked on lots, and Meg was always excellent. We decided that having dessert was obvious tonight. Just passing through town. The Friday night entrees were wonderful and the two ladies serving us were so kind and attentive. The music was good, the place is clean and comfortable, and it oozes a warm organic hip vibe that disarms. The prices reflect an organic, eclectic menu - not fast-food cheap but certainly not unreasonable for what you get. All in all, we couldn't have been more pleased with our somewhat random choice. The Torta Rustica was exceptional. The Bison was decent enough, with wonderfully fresh beans, but the layered potato-cheesy artistry that accompanied them was something special. Went to this place with some girlfriends last night because we had heard good things. Positives : The waitress was lovely and the atmosphere was very quaint. Downfalls: 1). We waited 1.5 HOURS just FOR APPETIZERS so we didn't bother ordering a meal and instead went down the street to the Heid Out for our meals because we were very hungry at this point. 2). My friend tried to order 2 different drinks before they finally had one that was available. 3). They ran out of appetizer plates so gave us 4 regular appetizer plates and 2 kids plates !4). As a new addition to Cranbrook, this place offers great COFFEE - and a new menu - so do not expect "same old- same old" here!!Flavours are light, nothing we had was over-spiced - light and fresh...Pricing was at the upper edge for what were used to - probably more in line with places like Vancouver...A (one) waffle with berry compote at $16 ?? This is a new venture, has a good vibe - if you want something different - this is it.
Love going to Soulfood when they have evening live music (great to go other times too) Relaxing friendly, atmosphere, great food, great service!Because the menu changes every two weeks it's hard to have a favorite dish! For lunch the Soulbowls are delish! And I love the Torta Rustica!!Everything here is local and/or organic!
