This gastropub dates back to the days of William Shakespeare but, having laid empty for some time, it was reopened by two chefs in 2012. Stopped by for drinks on a Saturday afternoon in February. Enjoyed the well-kept HPA but would have preferred a more traditional bar setting as all of the tables were setup for diners. There is a lovely outdoor area and also a marquee, and this clearly gives drinkers more options when the weather is warmer. Returned later that day as part of a much larger group for dinner. Nice old pub but could do better. We had to book ahead and pre-order because we were a party of 15. Very attentive staff but they didn't seem to focus on the task in hand. They seemed to get sidetracked. We had to ask three times for a member of staff to fetch a high chair. I had the Tavern Steak Burger with triple cooked chips. It arrived stone cold and the mince was over worked. It looked like a smash burger which someone had run over in a car. The chips were also tough and tasted like cold chip shop chips an hour after buying them. Needless to say it was inedible. I sent it back a swapped it for the Chicken burger which much better and this time the chips were hot and tasty. It's a shame...
This place serves the best pub food, offering exceptional value and meticulous attention to detail. The unique touches added by the chefs really deserve praise. For example, the steak burger comes with a delightful focaccia bun, and the lamb burger is paired with parmesan truffle chips, which are truly the best! Both the main menu and the three-course lunch menu are filled with delicious options, making it quite challenging to decide what to order due to the tempting choices. I also have to mention the Beavertown beer, which was a fantastic complement to the brilliant service we received today.
The Chicken Milanese was a standout dish, featuring subtle flavors that were both surprising and delightful. The use of local produce is a clear advantage for this kitchen. With an extensive menu, it would be hard to leave disappointed. It's also obvious that the waiting staff take pride in their work; they were attentive and well-informed about the menu, making us feel welcome and at ease. I have no hesitation in planning a return visit. Price per person: £40–50. Recommended dishes: Steak and Sticky Toffee Pudding. Réservez une table maintenant
This was my first visit to the restaurant. The menu is relatively small (especially if you exclude burgers, which aren't my favorite), but the dishes I chose were excellent. The service was outstanding—professional yet not overly formal and done with a sense of humor!
