The most recent night I attended was on Thursday and it's a little bit slow. Of course there's a much larger crowd on the weekend. There's a $10 entry fee with two sides to the location, having live bands playing a different genre on each side. You may move about between both sides but have to go outside to enter the other side. I typically order the cajun wings and sweet potato fries and amalwsys pleased. There's a bar with a small TV and an outside patio. People are very sociable in the summertime. There are also issues with the doors: in the jazz hall, the spring on the outside door is too weak, causing it to not close properly and letting in the freezing cold, much to the discomfort of the patrons. Even the staff, except for the excellent bartender and waitress, seem unaware of the problem. Additionally, the door between the two concert rooms could use better insulation or a double door setup; it’s simply unacceptable to have a jazz ballad disrupted by a lack of soundproofing.
The food was okay. Do not order the gumbo if you want something out of New Orleans. The 1/2 lb. burger was the safest option, and it was good. The drinks were decent. However, the band was terrific. It was the highlight of the evening. If you are ever in town or have a free night on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday, Lighthouse_DTX performs, and they will blow your mind!!! This place was a total vibe last night. I highly recommend it.
I enjoy Free Man’s for the live entertainment solely, I’ve ordered food here before and drinks .. neither are that memorable and sometimes the staff is a hit or miss not consistently good not consistently bad .. but the live music atmosphere tends to make me overlook the subpar service .

I was craving some comfort food, and this restaurant did not disappoint! The gumbo, jambalaya, brisket with gravy, and cheesecake were absolutely delicious—truly magical! I will definitely be coming back.
The atmosphere was fantastic, and the food was incredible! I was frustrated with the parking situation initially, but once I tasted the food, I felt like I was in heaven.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. The drinks were decently strong. The place was so homey. I loved our waitress and the food was beyond me. They killed it with the cornbread!

I was part of the sound crew for the 2024 New Years Show. I ordered some wings and fries after the setup. Not bad.
It's laid back. Live bands. Not as ghetto as the rest of deep ellum. I'll visit again.
