The George is our local, and closest pub. We missed it when it was closed until earlier this year, and welcomed it being open again.It was a bit hit miss back in early 2020, with no chef one night, broken down oven the next, which put us off to be honest.Then COVID hit, and everything shut.In June or July it opened again, and we visited hoping for the best. We met the new owner, who apparently runs a large pub/restaurant in Clacton, and he was really nice and friendly. He was also a really good chef, and the food we had on two occasions was really good, with generous portions and reasonable prices. I think I’m in love. It almost makes me want to divorce my husband that I left 10 years ago and get rid of the father of my child… THIS is exactly how pubs used to be… but with a massive twist: the food. The menu is small and if smoked meats is what you want, here is the place for you. I insist, really, you must go. It’s clean, welcoming and has a fire going next to the bar to heat the beautiful historic building. There’s a pool table and plenty of seating inside and out. The toilets are modern. The decor eclectic and inviting. Now, the most important bit: food. Heaven in my mouth. Smoked brisket, pulled pork, chicken, shrimp, bbq pork… none of this bought in rubbish. Was it open mike night or karaoke for one person? Quite well attended for a January although is was difficult to work out whether most of the customers were putting a brick wall between them and the music or they 'd had a meal and not moved. What was obvious was that most of the prime seating in the pub 'area ' had been taken over for entertainment leaving the largely separate restaurant area. A questionable decision... just saying.The George used to pride itself on having a good range of beers and was well attended when that was the case. Now the limited selection 2 or 3 beers at best from 2 breweries likely reduces customer footfall as does not being clear when the pub is open or closed an...
It's great to see the George restaurant reopen with Steve and Anna at the helm. We recently had a delicious family lunch before Christmas, although be mindful of portion sizes. They offer a good selection of local ales and reasonably priced wines, and they are dog friendly too. We're excited to see what success 2020 brings for them. I had a pleasant meal and beer at this restaurant on January 17th. I would like to clarify some misinformation I have seen - currently, the restaurant is open on Wednesdays to Sundays (not as indicated on their website), but there are plans to expand the opening days. They close at 12:00 AM. Contrary to rumors, the restaurant is not cold and the service is excellent!
Visited on a Sunday for a roast, would not recommended. There was a friendly atmosphere from the waitress but when we arrived there was no menu to choose from and was served a very minimal roast dinner. Roast was cold and potato’s and Yorkshire’s were clearly packet frozen and still cold: Veg was very watery and 2 small slices of meat. No children’s options.
what a fantastic pup, good beer, fantastic food, i had the smoked pork ribs that are smoked outside along with chicken and brisket, great condiments, honest the ribs were fantastic, but the chips were even better, good salad, nice beer, and live music being played,a really good pub, i am taking my back next week thanks nick
