The King Rufus was a favorite pub of mine whenever I visited my family in England. It had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with a menu offering a variety of drinks and food that strayed away from the ordinary. However, my most recent visit was disappointing as the pub had been taken over by a soulless chain (The Eating Inn) and transformed into a generic and uninspiring place. The new decor consisted of cheap wooden and chrome Ikea-style furnishings, with disinterested staff and a bland, microwaved Americanized menu that seemed like good value but was actually a culinary disaster. The King Rufus was transformed into an Eating Inn in Spring 2011 and now offers a wide selection of value-for-money dishes in a warm and friendly environment. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the food is well-prepared and served promptly. I tried the cheeseburger from the small plates menu, which came with chips and salad for only £4.95 - a great deal. My companions enjoyed the club sandwich, steaks, and sandwiches, all of which were delicious. Everyone left with clean plates! Starters are priced at £4-5, while mains range from £8-10 (with fish and steaks going up to £16+). The interior is clean and elegant, creating a relaxed atmosphere for diners.
This was our third visit in as many months, another fun evening. The food and drink were as good as ever and it makes such a difference too when the service is as impressive. We were served again by Kamila, who remembered us from previous visits, which is always nice, and as before she was full of good humour. We love her enthusiasm. We are always made to feel welcome there, by all the staff. It’s a great place to visit.
This was a terrible and surprising experience. My wife was charged a £60 fine just for forgetting to register the car upon arrival. Signs should not be used as a way to cheat customers out of more money. These fines should not be imposed on customers. We will not be returning to this restaurant.
