Had it not been for the promotional videos by James May we would never have known about The Royal Oak. The positives. Good size car park. (Lane leading to is a bit narrow for those with Sunday funday cars. Nice pub, atmosphere and very helpful, friendly staff. The food served for both evening meal and breakfast was very good. Eating in the oak room is very pleasant. The bed in our room, excellent. The rainfall shower and the hot water heating excellent. The negatives. First impressions of the accommodation is a very worn stair carpet and walls scuffed from people dragging bags. A narrow cluttered passageway that seems to be the office? Our room and en-suite wasn't clean. We were disturbed by...

The pub looked great. The staff were friendly. We both ordered and half way through my starter I was told the fish had a wash of fennel. I had already told them I had an intolerance to fennel. The waitress informed me of this and said there was a minute amount. My steak came up lovely and pink but it had not been rested and there was a large pool of blood on my plate. Not a great main. The pudding was descri bed as "dark chocolate mousse with cherries, pistachios and coffee icecream our waitress informed me it would be milk chocolate. I agreed it would be fine. What arrived looked like a cowpat with cherries and cecream. No pistachios. This was a step too far and it was sent back. The charge...
Had dinner here with some work colleagues en route to Southampton. What a lovely pub and village. Extremely good quality food and service and very good value. I was hoping to see Mr May, my hero, the part owner, but of course he's not here that often. One day perhaps! Anyway I can highly recommend. Just be sure to take it easy if you are driving there as the roads are very narrow. Be courteous and don't create a traffic jam by getting jammed head on into a large piece of farm machinery ; Food drinks: Excellent selection and quality
This was a solo visit and again the Royal Oak excelled in all areas : especially in the area of customer service where I was very well looked after .I watched the rugby in the bar and this added to the atmosphere (although I know the TV is only on for exceptional occasions which totally suits me). My Flat iron steak was perfect as well as the accompanying glasses of wine. Breakfast also fabulous . Again one of the best pubs in the country . I will be back . Well done the The Royal Oak team. Spent the night, had dinner and breakfast. Everything was top-notch. And yes, the Ashcombe room is quirky. Nearby activities: Not far from Stonehenge, if that 's your sort of thing. Safety: As it says, Mind your head in the Ashcombe room. Food drinks: Best pub meals I 've ever had. Unfair even to say pub meals . Rooms: 4 Service: 5 Location: 3 Hotel highlights: Quiet
