When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Mike Tallon, the proprietor, at the hostess station. We were shown to a lovely table for two by the window and the fireplace, which was adorned with several candles to create a cozy atmosphere without the heat, considering it was late May. The service we received was prompt, friendly, and courteous, striking the perfect balance without being intrusive. We were informed about several enticing daily specials, but we opted to order from the regular menu. My husband, grandmother-in-law and I took my mother-in-law to Townsend's for her birthday. We ordered the mussels for an appetizer which were so good. I had the 1/2 roast chicken and everyone else got the steak and we were all very happy with our meals. Everything was cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. Dessert was outstanding and homemade. We sampled the butterscotch pudding and pear sorbet. The service was surperb as well and we will definitely be returning to Toensend's in the near future. :
The food was quite good, though nothing particularly extraordinary. The fish was extremely fresh. Considering the location, the prices were on the higher side—typical of downtown Cleary Square. Our server was very friendly and efficient. It was a Saturday night, yet the restaurant was surprisingly quiet, making it a pleasant spot for conversation, unlike many other places these days. The atmosphere was modern and cozy, adding to the overall experience.
We were quite impressed with the food quality. However, I felt the waitress could have been a bit more attentive in noticing when customers were ready to settle their bills after finishing their meals. On a positive note, she was very friendly and provided us with detailed information about the menu for the rest of the week, which offered a wide variety of options. We expected much more from Townsend's. The beer was very good but everything else was pretty ordinary. Service was not good even though we were one of only two tables there at 6:30 on a Friday night. There was no valet but we were able to find a place in the street. And the food was OK but nothing like we had last year. Obviously something has happened here with the menu and the cooking.
