When I lived in Sydney the Tropical Restaurant in Jannali was one of my favourites. As a shift worker I went regularly for lunch on a Friday and often had the same dish: Pepper Chicken Fillet with steamed rice. It was an exceptional dish. On a recent visit to Sydney I stopped by on the evening of Fathers Day. It was pleasing to see that the restaurant was packed out with customers. I ordered my favourite dish from the very pleasant waitress who is still there.When the meal arrived I could see immediately that it had been prepared by a different chef. The Black Pepper sauce looked much thinner than before. It tasted OK, but wasn’t as good as it used to be. Perhaps I was just unlucky. Judging...
You don't expect much from a suburban Chinese but there are better ones than this. I was in a large group who all agreed the food was too salty. Service was unsmiling and aimed at rushing us out. I was nearly elbowed in the face as the waitress dived in to remove plates before they were quite finished. As a vego I know Chinese isn't a great choice but I planned to take veggies off shared dishes to add to my rice. Well I waited and finally got a bit of onion, then some stalks that just garnished another dish, so we ordered gado gado....it was horrible! Coating of weird tasteless brown sauce covering mostly shredded lettuce. There were a couple of bits of egg and I saw one bit of carrot.
Having been a local from the Shire, in particular the Jannali/Como and Kareela areas I had been past this restaurant on various occasions but never bothered to venture. Only recently have I discovered this true hidden gem. Whilst this is not the most visually appealing restaurant (decor is reflective of 1970s and 1980s retro style), the secret is hidden within the actual meals. I recommend the lemon chicken and special fried rice. This is one of the few lemon chickens where you actually pour the lemon on the chicken. Average cost for one person is between $15 and $25 which includes, rice, main and drink. I will definitely be back.
This has been my local Chinese for over 20 years. I have eaten in many times (make sure you book). It is BYO. They probably haven't remodelled in 20 years but I come here for the food. The menu isn't pages long where they try to cook every asian cuisine every heard of, but rather it solid and covers all the usual chinese favourites. The servings are very generous and meals are reasonably priced. Within 3 minutes walk there is two Thai restaurants and another chinese restaurant, and we still favour this 'ol favourite. It is not the place for a fancy night out, but a great place for a good Chinese meal.

Our family has been eating from this restaurant for many many years and have only had a disappointing meal on a couple of occasions. I have tried other local Chinese with friends but prefer this to all others in the price range. We always order the mini spring rolls and could happily fill up on just those but I usually end up with the combination satay (Chinese style, they do Satay sticks as well which are quite good with noodles). A real local restaurant were consistency is what you get. Good flavours all served in good time. For tables, always a good idea to book unless like us you eat at 6pm with the kids. Take away is also available, definately made good use of this service. One of the favourites for the kids and plenty of variety for all to choose from. Prices are good as well.

Cheap, cheerful Chinese food. Consistent and reliable, we love this place and recommend regular visits.
Go there regularly, decor could use a make over but incredibly good value and most dishes are delis!
