U Lampione - Réserver une table

We had stayed in Macinaggio for one week and had seen many diners at the U Columbu so on our last night, Sat the 19th May we decided to book a table in the evening at 19.30. The welcome was very friendly and we decided to eat on the terrace under the grapevine pergola. We had already decided on the menu Corse due to my wife not being fond of fish. We had salad and fish soup for starters the soup and accompaniments were very good then for mains my wife had the butchers choice which was a decent piece of steak and I had calamari which was different to how I have ever had it previously and was very good, we both had the corse cake for desert which was ok all accompanied by a 1/2 litre of good house red. Overall a very good meal, the only dissapointment was the service which while friendly was inattentative and with only a little effort this would have been a 5 rating. The areas which let the service down were that while the restaurant was not busy two servers were serving the same tables, there was a wrong starter, after the mains we sat for ages while the male waiter chatted to guests next to us then walked right by our finished plates to chat to guests waiting to enter and then back to chat to the original couple. We had to ask for our desert. After finishing we asked for the bill, which was acknowledged but the bill never arrived so I had to go to the till to ask to pay and then oh the bill, which took a liitle time to work out, just in csase you need to know it was 16 euro x 2 plus 8.50 euro for the wine, not difficult. I tendered 50 and asked for change so that I could leave a tip, sorry no change, so we sorted the 50 cents and I was given a 10 euro bill which was too much for a tip, so I could not leave a tip. Added to this was a sign which requested people not to smoke, a French speaking couple sat side on too us and immediately began to smoke, they were then offered an ashtray by the waiter and proceeded to smoke another two cigarettes, not sure what the law is in Corsica regarding this but as a courtesy it was extremely inconsiderate.

The clue is in the location: the fish could waggle themselves from the boat to your plate, so close is the restaurant to the port. We had mixed grilled fish for two, robustly priced at EUR 30 a head, but worth it. We had deliciously fresh sea bream, sardines, massive prawns, squid and sea bass, grilled in an excellent herby rub and served with a lovely fruity salsa and proper crispy chips. We couldn’t finish it all. The kids had melon and ham and tomato and mozzarella carpaccio — delicious too. The place is nice and buzzy, the staff are on-the-ball and funny. But yes, you do have to bring cash because they don’t take cards.

Typical local restaurant in nice location opposite the town marina. In relatively old building, we followed the friendly waiter and ordered mixed fish and seafood plater. The fish and the giant shrimps were fresh as if they just came out of the sea. For anybody who love fish, this is the most important ingredient. On top of it it was prepared with excellent spices. We loved it!

The people working there are SO friendly and helpful, especially as we don't speak French. My entrecote was perfectly cooked at medium rare and I don't know what they do to make their chips taste so terrific. You sit inside an area covered in vines it feels really cosy. Even going in to pay the bill is fun, having another chat. A very good night out.

We had entrecote, which resembled a ribeye. Really very tasty. A good cook. The waiters were struggling a bit, and running to keep up. No cards accepted.
